1920s photograph showing tracks leading into a tunnel, with a cutting around. In the distance men stand. Trees grow on the ridgeline.
#OnThisDay 1924 an explosion at #Manton tunnel, #Rutland, killed 2 workers & injured 3.
Last year we helped mark the centenary of the incident, working with descendants & with the industry.

We met Dorothy Buckby last year, as she wanted to share her recollections of the accident which injured her railwayman father at #Manton, #Rutland, in 1924.
We remain grateful to Dorothy for her interview, & are proud we could share it for posterity:

I’ve been knocking on doors & talking to passersby in #Manton, #Rutland, where people are supportive of the police but concerned about govt plans to abolish Rutland.

Close up of a plaque, reading: 'Dedicated to the memory of our railway colleagues whose lives were lost following an explosion that occurred here, at Manton Junction, on 24th May 1924 John Thomas Cockerill (1861-1924) William Henry Hibbert (1868-1924) Also to the survivors of the same accident Richard Shillaker (1863-1942) John George Buckby (1881-1965) Thomas Shillcock (1878-1941) One century on, we remember them and vow to never let it happen again. Two railway tracks in a green cutting, leading to a tunnel in the distance. Taken with permission, under supervision & from a position of safety.
Brilliant Network Rail colleagues have erected a memorial plaque at #Manton Junction, to mark the 1924 accident & remember those involved.
Really proud we were able to contribute by bringing the incident & those involved to light at the centenary.
