During World War II, #Cahun and lifelong partner #MarcelMoore launched a two-person resistance campaign against the Nazis who had occupied Jersey. For this they would be sentenced to death (saved at the last minute by the #Armistice).

This is a self-portrait photomontage by the French surrealist artist Claude Cahun, titled M.R.M (Sex), created circa 1929. The work explores themes of identity, gender fluidity, and the subconscious, which were central to the Surrealist movement. Cahun, who used the pronoun "they," often challenged traditional gender roles through their self-portraits, blurring the lines between masculine and feminine. The collage incorporates various symbolic elements, including fragmented body parts, a mask with different expressions, a butterfly, and a small figure of a horse inside the head. The title "M.R.M." refers to Marcel Moore, Cahun's stepsister, life partner, and frequent collaborator, who likely took the photograph that serves as the base for the montage.
