Behold, the Northern Cardinal! This fellow decided that blending in is for amateurs. While other birds are busy wearing their sensible, camouflage-colored pajamas, this guy is rocking a full-body, high-visibility scarlet ensemble in the dim light. He's basically a feathered emergency beacon, a flashy, non-migratory diva who doesn't even dull his plumage in winter. He's so red, he makes a stop sign look subtle. Perched in the gloom of the bare branches, he's less of a stealthy woodland creature and more like the only lit Christmas ornament left on the tree after the power went out. You can almost hear him thinking, "Darkness? I am the light source!" His vibrant color, which he gets from his diet of seeds and berries, ensures he's always the star of the show, even when the show is just sitting on a stick in the middle of the night. He's a bird with undeniable confidence and swagger, making a statement regardless of the lighting.
