On #ThisDayInHistory in 1970, the #Soviet #Lunokhod1, the first robotic #rover on the lunar surface, landed at #MareImbrium. It was expected to operate for three months but functioned for almost 11 months. It used a solar array to get power during the day and polonium at night.

A stunning telescopic mosaic showcasing the northwestern region of the Moon's Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains), specifically the Sinus Iridum (Bay of Rainbows). The image highlights the bay's rugged arc, bordered by the Jura Mountains and Cape Laplace, a sunlit cape towering nearly 3,000 meters above the bay's surface. The dark, smooth area is a lava-flooded impact basin, a testament to the Moon's dynamic geological past.
