They ran until they got to the nearest and safest place they knew: their club room. It wasn't until they got to the street that James realised where Tom was taking them, and it wasn't until he froze at the open door that it really hit him. The room was just as the last time he had seen it, as if nothing had changed. Kit's laboratory in a corner, their bookshelves in another, the book he had taken out to read last still sprawled over the table. For a moment, the image of Matthew lifting his head up from his seat on the couch and greeting them, admonishing them for being late with that bright smile of his, was so strong James almost felt like the last few months had been a particularly long and bad dream.
