"Denis avait une figure ronde plutôt souriante où se lisaient la volonté et la réflexion. Son œil bleu regardait à l'intérieur." Pierre Bonnard

La #BNF montre comment les artistes #nabis (1890-1900) réinventèrent l'art de l'estampe. Mais plus que le sujet en lui-même, ce sont les lithographies de #PierreBonnard #EdouardVuillard #FelixVallotton et #MauriceDenis qui donnent à l'exposition tout son attrait. A voir !

Painted early in his career, when he was only 21, French artist Maurice Denis portrayed his future sister-in-law Eva Meurier sitting in profile in a wicker chair. Her face seems imperturbably focused on intimate thoughts; however, it is her fine, sinuous hands resting in her lap that expresses Eva’s talent as a musician. She wears her dark hair up behind the ears and a forest green long-sleeve dress with long thin yellow lines.

Denis intentionally painted the portrait on a fragment of an abandoned picture, hints of which cleverly appear in the openings in the muted green background and around the edges of the composition, as if Eva’s portrait is emerging from an earlier painting.

Denis met Marthe Meurier in October 1890 and from June 1891 they had a long romance, meticulously documented in his journal before getting married June 12, 1893. His spouse became an important part of his art, appearing in many pictures and also in decorative works, like painted fans, often as an idealized figure representing purity and love.

Beginning in 1891, shortly after his engagement, Denis made Marthe the most frequent subject of his paintings; she was depicted, in purified and idealized form, doing household tasks, taking naps, and at the dining room table. She appeared in his landscapes, and in his most ambitious works of the time, a series called “The Muses.”

His wife, like her sister Eva, played the piano, and throughout the 1890s Denis had a growing interest in the connections between music and art including a portrait of Marthe at the piano in 1890.

In some ways different from the others, Redon is the group's revered senior figure. Over time, Redon had come to be more closely associated with Cézanne and his inclusion in the picture is not surprising; Denis was a fan of Redon. #MauriceDenis
