May apples are colonies of plants. Like Aspens and Pawpaws, there are a number of plants growing on a rhizome. The varieties we have in our woods produce one or two leaves. The plants with two leaves are the ones that produce flowers. This plant has two large leaves that are unfurling around a bud. The flower will open underneath the leaves.
