Avoirdupois Weight Units of weight used for everything from groceries to body mass are based on the avoirdupois measurement system of weights that uses pounds and ounces as units. However, precious metals (and gemstones) are weighed using the troy system. Troy weights were made official for gold and silver in 1527. The Avoirdupois system of weights is used in the United States, and is still used in varying degrees in everyday life in the United Kingdom, Canada and other former British colonies, despite their official adoption of the metric system. Troy Weight A troy ounce is the standard mass unit for precious metals and it equals 31.1034768 grams. There are 12 troy ounces in every troy pound. There are 16 ounces in every avoirdupois pound. 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. 1 avoirdupois ounce = 28.3495 grams. With a difference of 2.754 grams, a troy ounce is around 10% heavier. 1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces = 373.242 grams. 1 avoirdupois pound = 16 avoirdupois ounces = 453.592 grams. With a difference of 80.35 grams, a troy pound is lighter by 2.83 avoirdupois ounces.
