When you read Michael Longley’s poetry, you can only do so by hearing his melodious voice inside your head as you read his words. One of the very best. Condolences to Edna and all the family #MichaelLongley #RIP
#MichaelLongley was not just a literary genius, but one of the warmest, most engaging people I have had the pleasure to know.
His sensitivity and insight were rivaled only by his humility and ability to communicate hope in his work.
Truly sad that he is no longer with us.
Today is a very sad day, but we are left with a tremendous legacy
This my not be one of his more renowned poems, but is one of my favourites...
My thoughts are with Edna

The Waterfall
If you were to read my poems, all of them
I mean my life's work at this one sitting,
in the one place, let it be here
by this half-hearted waterfall...

Michael Longley RIP
A winding loss.
Every word, a story; fuck, every pause between them.
The language had rarely been in better hands.

THE SNOWDROPS by Michael Longley Inauspicious between headstones On Angel Hill, wintry love- Tokens for Murdo, Alistair, Duncan, home from the trenches, Back in Balmacara and Kyle, Cameronians, Gordon Highlanders Clambering on hands and knees Up the steep path to this graveyard The snowdrops whiten, green- Hemmed frost-piercers, buttonhole Or posy, Candlemas bells For soldiers who come here on leave And rest against rusty railings Like out-of-breath pallbearers.
Go well, Michael Longley. What a privilege it was to hear him read at the inaugural Winchester Poetry Festival in 2014. I pasted this poem into my notebook from the festival programme. He was commissioned to write it for the festival and the 100th anniversary of WWI. Rest in Peace. #MichaelLongley
