U.S. Energy Department Mandates Campbell Plant Operation Extension U.S. Energy Department Mandates Campbell Plant Operation Extension The U.S. Department of Energy has directed the Consumers Energy J.H. Campbell coal-fired power plant in west Michigan to continue operations, extending its lifespan at least until late August. This directive stems from concerns about potential electricity shortages within the central United States. The originally slated closure date for the plant was May 31. Michigan regulators have strongly opposed this intervention, asserting that maintaining the plant's operation is unwarranted. A spokesperson for the Michigan Public Service Commission emphasized that current electricity production exceeds demand, rendering the plant’s continued operation unnecessary. Nine Michigan students competed in the National Spelling Bee. Michigan's lawmakers and business leaders convened for the Mackinac Policy Conference. Low-income Michigan families with school-age children will receive Summer EBT funds. Planned Parenthood of Michigan anticipates repercussions from federal funding reductions.

Watch live: Whitmer to address business leaders at Detroit Economic Club Detroit — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will address members of the Detroit Economic Club on Monday at a midday meeting in downtown Detroit. The second-term Democratic governor is expected to talk about her economic policy proposals amid turmoil in Michigan's auto industry over President Donald Trump's tariffs on imported vehicles and parts, including cars the Detroit Three automakers assemble in plants in Canada, Mexico and overseas. She is expected to speak at 12:05 p.m. Monday, followed by a question-and-answer session on stage with Jim Jacobs, the former longtime president of Macomb Community College. More: How tariffs could upend EV adoption in America Whitmer's speech comes five days after she was in the Oval Office for a meeting with Trump and became part of a press conference he was having to sign a series of executive orders and directives. The governor has defended her decision to remain in the Oval Office after being shuffled into the room by White House aides as Trump was signing orders and addressing reporters. "It was not where I wanted to be or planned to be or would have liked to have been," Whitmer said Thursday. "I disagree with a lot of stuff that was said and the actions that were taken. But I stayed in the room because I needed to make the case for Michigan, and that's my job." With cameras rolling, Whitmer and House Speaker Matt Hall, a Republican, talked to the president about the need to build a barrier near Chicago to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes and their request for the Pentagon to assign a new squadron of fighter jets to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township.
