Yehn’a quickly stuffed some jerky and spare clothes in a bag and ran into the next room where his wife attempted to calm their 2-year-old.
“Mommy, I wanna see the fiya-wooks!” The toddler exclaimed. Yehn’a stopped to listen for a moment as the house shook with each explosion. The imperials were getting close. Too close.
“Not tonight, sweetheart,” his wife herded the child towards the table where a cup of calming tea waited, “We’ll see some fireworks another time. I promise.”
Yehn’a peeked behind the curtain, scanning the road outside for any sign of his family. The atmosphere was bright. The clouds were illuminated by the sunset, and the streets by flames raging in the distance. There! He thought, as his mother appeared from around a corner, pulling his kid sister along behind her.
The older Miqo’te woman’s face was a picture of stoic determination, though Yehn’a could see the anxiety flickering in her eyes as she neared the house. Conversely, his sister’s anger was clear, even from afar, as she scrunched her face and swished her tail in agitation. Yehn’a opened the door, ushering them inside.
“I want to stay and help you fight!” His sister’s whining began as soon as they crossed the threshold, eliciting a sigh from their mother as she adjusted the pack over her shoulder.
Yehn’a knelt down so he was eye-level with the 12-year-old, “You would be an excellent warrior, Cemi,” he put one hand on her shoulder, and motioned with the other, guiding her attention to where his wife rocked his toddler to sleep after she’d finally drank the tea, “but Mihke can’t stay here, so we need you to go with her. Do you think you can do that for me?”
Cemi grumbled an affirmative, and the family was soon on their way to the edge of town, where a small group waited with a chocobo cart. After their final goodbyes, Yehn’a stood with his wife, arm around her shoulders, watching the cart disappear in the distance on the road to the Fringes, and the Twelveswood beyond.

A Promise Left Unfulfilled
(a flashback from a longer piece about a dungeon I designed around Mihke. this also serves as the first piece of writing I've shared with the internet; and, yes, I draft in comic sans)
