How Gold Miners Navigated Nature's Underground Cathedral A friend visiting from Mexico joined me for a trip to Moaning Caverns near Angels Camp in the Sierra Nevada foothills. We had the unique experience of being the only participants on the tour. Our guide Christina led us 165 feet underground via a towering steel spiral staircase. The cavern's interior resembles a grand cathedral. Gold miners discovered this cave in 1851, and Christina shared how they relied on candlelight for exploration. She recreated this historical experience by lighting two candles and extinguishing all electric lighting — visibility became extremely limited in the flickering glow. -- ƒ/0.95, 50 mm, 0.3 sec, ISO 200, Sony A7 II, Canon 50mm f0.95 "Dream Lens", HDR, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, © 2025 Peter Thoeny, @Quality HDR Photography
