Some 24mm wide angle scenes from #WaterfordNY this morning. #PeeblesIsland #MohawkRiver #Photography
A photograph from 1913, showing two buildings – a carriage barn to the left, with a carriage parked outside, and an ice house in the center background, painted with local advertising signs – submerged in flood waters of the Mohawk River. This real photo postcard of a 1913 flood along Scotia’s Dyke shows the levels the Mohawk River used to reach on a regular basis before the modern Barge Canal brought significantly more control of the river. The building on the postcard with the painted advertisement for Barney’s was the Collins Lake Ice warehouse. Dated April 6, 1913, the writer tells Mrs. E. Howard of Dolgeville: “This picture was taken just this end of the dyke near Sanders this is the way the dyke looked, where the water was so high it was a sight this is four times i have seen it like this the river and the lake was one body of water.”
My latest #localHistory post looks at my hometown's biggest park, Collins Park, long a center of community along the #MohawkRiver. As some old pictures show, it was sometimes hard to tell apart from the river during floods. I also found a surprise […]

A photograph of a man wearing a large cap, what appears to be a mid-weight, mid-length jacket and trousers, standing on a vast field of broken ice on a frozen river. The low shoreline is in the far distance.
The back of the post card, with the penciled inscription "Dick on Mohawk river at Schenetady [sic] in 1917 while working in G.E." The right side of the postcard is divided, placing it after 1907, and the stamp box is surrounded by "AZO," the Kodak brand of photographic paper used, and four triangles in the corners which were used in 1904-1918, according to one source. Happily, the captioner dated this for us anyway.
This is an old #rppc #postcard that I bought at a shop in #Schenectady a couple of years back. Fascinated with it but never sure just what to do with it. It's a real photo postcard showing "Dick on Mohawk River at Schenectady in 1917 while working in G.E." […]

Winter scenes from #WaterfordNY and the confluence of the #HudsonRiver and #MohawkRiver this afternoon. The scene will change tomorrow with temps almost 30 degrees higher and rain. #Canon #EOSR6II #RF45mmf12 #Photography
Temperatures shot up into the mid 40s this afternoon and although lighting conditions weren't great one photographer was out catching the Bald Eagles below #CohoesFalls. Dozens of mature and immature eagles have been hanging out here lately. #MohawkRiver #RF45mmf12 #Photography

One night recently, someone illegally dumped hundreds of tires down the bank and into the #MohawkRiver behind U-HAUL on Simmons Island in #CohoesNY. The photos show a small part of the pile. NYS EnCon is supposedly investigating.

Since I had a good experience with the Minolta 200mm lens yesterday, I decided to break out the matching 50mm lens from the same series in 1978, the MD ROKKOR-X 50mm f/1.7. Another positive test outing. #CohoesFalls #MohawkRiver #VischerFerryNaturePreserve #Photography

The 2nd branch of the #MohawkRiver from Ontario Street in #CohoesNY. There is no longer a 1st branch which used to separate from what you see here to form Green Island which is now not an island. Most of the water when it is dry goes into the 4th branch from the power plant. #Photography

Undated advertisement from sometime between 1870-1912, with a colorful litho illustration of the broad falls of the Mohawk River at Cohoes, showing at the left an impressive but simple three-story hotel with surrounding porch, positioned below the falls. In part, it reads: CATARACT HOUSE COHOES FALLS, N.Y. THE ATTRACTIONS. Parties visiting this section of the Country should make it a special object to visit these "FALLS," it being one of the grandest sights for miles around. The CATARACT HOUSE is beautifully situated upon a bluff overlooking the Falls, and from its Observatory the Country can be seen for miles around. It is one of the most delightful places we know of, the cool breeze from the Falls always mitigating the intensity of the heat. THE FALLS ARE THREE MILES FROM TROY, EIGHT FROM ALBANY, and but a short distance from SHAKER VILLAGE. No expense has been spared to make the Cataract "Excelsior," in addition to the beautiful scenery surrounding the same. The artificial Fall 123 feet, the Falls of the "Mighty Mohawk" 86 feet, the Walk in the Dell, on the bed of the river, &c., &c., combine to make this a very attractive resort. Pleasure Gondolas are on the Pond near the Cataract House; the Scenery from the many windows in the large Billiard Room is surprisingly beautiful, and a spacious Ball Room for the accommodation of Sleighing Parties is attached to the House. This one has *everything* – waterfalls, fires, diamond stick pins, trans-oceanic gambling! A landmark hotel opened by an African-American caterer! And, to my great surprise, the discovery of what I believe are remnants of the last version of this long-lost […]

The #MohawkRiver below #CohoesFalls. In this section, it's not dammed up for navigation as the flight of locks bypasses the falls. And a good amount of water goes that way too. #BrookfieldPowerplant #Photography

I was about to not bother bringing #kayaks on our short weekend trip back to the old hometown, but then our grownkid said they wanted to paddle with us . . . and we had the most delightful afternoon on the #MohawkRiver in a section I didn't used to paddle that much.
Two kayaks on a river, both paddlers facing the camera. The river bends ahead so the two river banks, lined with trees, appear to meet in the distance. The sky is bright blue and lined with thin clouds.
The bow of one kayak, and in the middle distance, very close to it, two more kayakers are seen from the back. They are on a wide river, with a long line of trees forming the banks on both sides.
The bow of a kayak pointing into a thick mass of aquatic vegetation, mostly water chestnut.
Two kayakers, lined up side by side but in opposite directions, both looking at the camera and smiling.
