An interior photograph of Palais Garnier in Paris. Massive, multilayer chandeliers hang from ornate ceiling roses nestled between painted murals. The heavily detailed mouldings, columns, frames, and other millwork are covered from floor to ceiling in gold leaf. Doorways are hung with elaborate tapestry valances and curtains which—unsurprisingly—are also predominantly gold. Architect Charles Garnier reportedly told Empress Eugenie his work was "Napoleon III style", which presumably means 'I smushed together the most ostentatious styles previously known and then bedazzled the shit out of it'.
Initially named le nouveau Opéra de Paris, the extraordinary opulence quickly led to it being called Palais Garnier instead. Understated it is most definitely not.

A partially-stitched needlepoint canvas with pink and blue flowers and green leaves. I am using a sharpie pen to draw additional design elements onto the unstitched parts of the canvas. The project is about 10 inches wide and the canvas is more than 36 inches long. I am thinking this may become a sheath for one armored of my weaving swords when it is done.
Playing around with this vintage needlepoint canvas. We'll see where it goes.

A photograph of a temporary assemblage arrangement. A cut out of a Swarovski crystal horse has been arranged with a mix of jewellery, paper, plastic, and leather to approximate a side view of a carousel horse with the platform and canopy. Canopy: Gold paper food safe tray liner with a scalloped lacy edge, a necklace of large pink and cream faux pearls, and a cluster of vintage metal floral brooches. Middle: The black faux leather reverse side of a large envelope clutch, a black and white striped paper bag, a magazine cutout of a Swarovski horse, a thin crystal tennis bracelet is around the horse's neck with a vintage clip-on earring as a medallion. Platform: A rectangular box is covered in a plastic bag with a zebra stripe pattern. A strand of size graduating silver beads runs just beneath the hooves of the horse, a necklace of pearlized charcoal beads lays on the top of the box. At the very bottom and partially obscured by the box is a necklace of baroque pearls. The short course run over a few days at the V&A was about taking one of your own photos/art, turning it into a vector illustration that could be used by a laser cutter. The design was engraved on a piece of ply wood and then masking sections were cut and used to screen print on part of the design. As with most things I do, it was a bit too much detail to be a really successful final project in the allotted time/as a first attempt at a few new skills... But the process was a great learning experience!
