Freezing conditions expected Thursday night ahead of sunny Mother's Day weekend
Michiganians who bought their mom potted flowers or a hanging basket for Mother's Day may want to bring them inside tonight.
Forecasters say this weekend should be sunny and mild throughout the state, but the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for 32 counties in northern Lower Michigan, as well as a frost advisory for 15 counties in the southern part of the state for Thursday night.
An area stretching from Oceana County, east to Bay County, and all points north, are under a freeze warning until 9 a.m. Friday, according to the NWS.
The warning advises that freezing temperatures could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.
The advisory applies to the rest of Lower Michigan, including the Thumb, with the exception of Metro Detroit. Overnight temperatures will fall into the lower to mid-30s. Like the warning, the advisory expires at 9 a.m. Friday.
Residents in both the advisory and warning areas are advised to protect tender plants from the cold.
In Detroit, overnight lows are expected to be closer to 40 degrees.
Temperatures will climb throughout the day Friday, with highs expected in the mid-60s in Metro Detroit and western Lower Michigan, the lower 60s in the northern part of the peninsula and the upper 50s in the Thumb.
Sunny or mostly sunny conditions and highs in the 60s and 70s are projected for Saturday and Sunday.
NWS weekend forecast for Detroit:
Friday: Sunny, high near 65
Friday night: Mostly clear, low around 45
Saturday: Mostly sunny, high near 75
Saturday night: Mostly clear, low around 47
Sunday: Sunny, high near 71
Sunday night: Clear, low around 51
