Museum Musings: Tekla “Tillie” Pawluk - Prince Albert Daily Herald Prince Albert Historical Society A member of the Historical Society asked a simple question on Family Day which led to the research for this column. “Where,” he asked, “was the Savoy Café”. That did not take long to answer. The Savoy Café first showed up in the 1913 Henderson’s Directory, and continued through until the

Page 012 of the Kirby Art and Style Collection Artbook depicts Kirby, a few differently dressed Waddle Dees, a Waddle Doo in a tie, and Kracko posing as one of the clouds dangling lights to illuminate the paintings on display!

I felt it funny to imagine Kirby going to all this trouble to look fancy, and like an Artiste, and then end up forgetting every single artist, on their way out the door!

I particularly enjoy how it is a compilation of art through the years, spritework, woodwork of a Maxim Tomato and 2D pieces, all of which, especially in the case of Kirby, deserve as much recognition as each other✨️

Max-im To-ma-to is a 5 syllable line on it's own! This stuff is hard! (Positive Connotation ✨️)

Playing Magic The Gathering has taught me the Artist's names can sometimes be just as important as knowing how to play the game.

With the way things are going, a Kirby Secret Lair isn't too far out of the question! XD

The Will House/Colonial Apartments  Fred PaytonPrince Albert Historical SocietyIn his book, Prince Albert the First Century, Gary Abrams refers to the years 1910 – 1913 as the Boom Years.  In a single week in March, 1910, more land changed hands than in the previous two years. Much of this activity resulted from the expectation that the Hudson Bay and Pacific Railway had surveyed 150 miles between the city and Churchill, Manitoba.

North Polls Scandal, aka the Ballot Box Scandal When I was researching my column on Samuel James Donaldson, I came across a reference to the North Polls scandal. I had never before heard of such a scandal, and determined that I would do further research on that subject when time permitted. That research would likely have still been sometime in the future had it not been for a comment in an email request which I recently received from a former Prince Albert citizen now living in British Columbia.

Jewish contributions to Prince Albert and area Fred PaytonPrince Albert Historical SocietyAn announcement in the Daily Herald of seven merchants planning to be closed for two days mid-week in September, 1916 caught my eye recently. I shortly thereafter came across a similar announcement in a September, 1917 Daily Herald. One reason why the announcement caught my eye was a story I had read previously a few weeks previous to that regarding the barbers of Prince Albert petitioning our city council to allow them to close for a half day (

Museum Musings: R.D. Brooks Frequently the Brooks name has been in the local news over the past few weeks. Having been active in pursuing the history of Prince Albert and area, I was familiar with another Brooks who was often in the news beginning a century ago. At that time, were you to hear someone speak of R.D., you automatically knew that they were referring to R.D. Brooks. Brooks being a fairly common name, it was not until a recent conversation with Donna that I connected the two Brooks families.Ruggles D.

MUSEUM MUSINGS: THE MCDONALD BLOCK Fred PaytonPrince Albert Historical SocietyAlthough we have lost many of them, Prince Albert’s downtown has many old buildings with wonderful architectural interest. I enjoy stopping and looking at them, and thinking of how many people have walked past them, shopped in them, or worked within their walls. Were I asked which of them is my favourite, I would be hard pressed to choose. But amongst the top three would have to be the McDonald Block.

Museum Musing: Remembering Helga Fred PaytonPrince Albert Historical SocietyHad you turned on CKBI radio in the early 1960s, around 5:30 in the evening, you would likely have heard the sound of a single engine bush plane starting up. This would have been followed by the voice of Helga Reydon welcoming you to The Northern News. Helga, along with her colleague Harold Read, would then present a programme outlining news, events, and other items which would be to interest to listeners in northern Saskatchewan.
