One side benefit of playing this Captain Kangaroo holiday record is learning that Mr. Green Jeans' aliases include Lumpy Brannum and Uncle Lumpy. Turns out he had an early TV show of his own called "Uncle Lumpy's Cabin" which aired in NY around 1951. And no, Mr. Green Jeans was not related to Frank Zappa.

Ages ago... literally... I think when I was still living in NJ in the 1980s, someone at a collector's used shop told me to watch for a rare version of Merle Saunders Fire Up with flaming font lettering. Essentially a Jerry Garcia Band joint, I searched for years but only found the more common flame colored standard font. 4 or 5 years ago I found a German pressing with the flame font (which is very nice) but this weekend for the first time I found a US copy. If Discogs is accurate, this seems to have been a 1977 reissue, probably short lived. Sounds warmer than my German LP. For now I'll keep both. Found at Offshore Sounds in Santa Cruz.

Moody Monday - Last spin for the night, its been a while since I played this 1955 James Moody album on Prestige. It looks well loved for sure, but plays pretty well even without the mono cartridge. Almost never see these early albums around.

I'm at the stage of exploring Milton Nascimento's music where I will pretty much pick up most any of his albums if they are reasonably priced, Brazilian imports or -- in the case of this 1983 live album "Ao Vivo" -- both! Lovely stuff. Still, I dream of finding a vinyl copy of his 1972 masterpiece "Clube Da Esquina."

Fun bargain bin find today: a 1978 German press of the legendary Stiff Live Stiffs album on seaside green vinyl. Never even knew this edition existed. I have blue Belgian pressing somewhere. For those not familiar, this is a "new wave" classic with Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric, Ian Dury and Larry Wallis.

Some DJ dumped a bunch of abused 12-inch singles and LPs at a local thrift. Just 2 were worthwhile given the thrift's 4buc prices. First up is this 2001 UK King Tubby compilation. It was quite dirty & finger printed but it cleaned up decently. #meters #musicdky #music #soul #funk #neworleans

Now playing another gem from yesterday's gift from a moving crate digging friend: a pretty much perfect copy of Astrud Gilberto's 2nd 1965 studio LP, still in the original shrink wrap. Sounds wonderful in living Mono. Like last night's album I posted, this didn't need cleaning. Both major upgrades.
