Najac. A 13th century village
that runs along the spine of the hill. Dominated by the Château (partially ruined), built by locals as punishment for their Cathar believes. Good legs and lungs are required if you are going to climb the tower in the Château.

I found this Calopteryx virgo whilst taking a break near a fast flowing stream at the 12km mark. It was also at this point that my wife found out we still had another 6km to go - I was Mr popular for the reminder of the walk.

A photo of a Green Whip Snake in a standard strike pose. Its body is a pale green/grey colour. Its head is dark brown broken up by cream patterning. It has an orange ring around its eye.
Also came across a number of snakes pretty much all them slipped away very quickly. However, Hierophis viridiflavus decided to hold its ground and get into a strike pose. These are now thought to be venomous so a few quick shots and then left to get on its way.

Went on a 18km hike yesterday with my big old Sony in hand. This was a tiny Leptophyes punctatissima nymph found in a stunning forest we came across halfway through the walk.

Here is a nice little Snipe Fly from the fields bordering the river at the bottoms of Najac in France. Best to get out early whilst it’s still cold so the bugs aren’t as active and easier to photograph

I wasn’t just finding the insects today either - also found this insectivorous member of the shrew family. This is Crocidura russula - the Greater White-toothed Shrew. Was lying in the middle of the track so helped it across into the undergrowth.

The herd winters in an open hangar, with a 24/7 access to outside. They come in like clockwork, morning and evening, for their hay. They're all locked in place during feeding time to avoid undefendable attacks between the cattle.
