On #ThisDayInHistory in 2001, the #NEARShoemaker spacecraft settled onto #433Eros, becoming the first human craft to land on an #asteroid as well as the first to enter orbit around one. Eros is a peanut-shaped, ten-mile-wide, rocky, near-Earth asteroid in orbit between us & Mars.
25 Years Ago Today NEAR - Shoemaker Touched Down on 433 Eros after successfully orbiting the asteroid, two firsts in space pioneering history.

Graph showing gamma-ray spectra from the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft's landing on asteroid Eros. The graph displays the relative intensity of detected elements (Iron, Oxygen, Silicon, Potassium) in Eros' regolith. An inset image shows an artistic depiction of the spacecraft resting on the asteroid's surface.

A dramatic black and white image of asteroid 433 Eros, taken by the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft from an altitude of approximately 50 kilometers. The image showcases the asteroid's rugged surface, littered with boulders, with the largest one, roughly 30 meters across, situated near a shadowy crater. The sun's rays illuminate the scene, creating striking contrasts and shadows. This near-Earth asteroid's journey from the main asteroid belt highlights the gravitational forces shaping our solar system.

A montage of images from the NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft's descent onto asteroid 433 Eros on February 12, 2001. The images show the asteroid's surface at decreasing altitudes, revealing details like fractured boulders, craters, and a collapsed channel. The final image, at 128 meters, is expanded to show features only centimeters across.
