Important paper on #nongame fishes shows lots of hybridization between minnow species.

A black buffalo with its intermediate mouth orientation (approx halfway between terminal like bigmouth buffalo and sub-terminal like smallmouth buffalo). Correctly differentiating BKB from SMB in OK has proven difficult, according to genetic results. Hybridization complicates the similar morphology.
This is a large spotted gar collected from a small reservoir population with only the single gar species present (four species are native to OK).
Gratuitous #nongame pics taken on our study lake this week. #buffalo #gar
Check out our #nongame #fisheries #management symposium at #AFS155.

This week we determined via angling that smallmouth #buffalo will consume #paddlefish eggs. #nongame

Me standing in front of a small group at a nature center giving a presentation titled “Rough Fish Escapee and De Facto Sport Fish- How Paddlefish Have Served as a Model for Nongame Fisheries Management in Oklahoma”
Though my presentation title on #paddlefish & #nongame #fisheries #management appears intimidating for a public space, the invited talk I gave at Ray Harral Nature Center this weekend was a joy. So much engagement and thoughtful questions and comments from the audience.
Soft cover special issue of Environmental Biology of Fishes on Underappreciated Native Fishes of North America and their Management.
Nice to receive this in the mail at almost the exact moment I was writing about the #nongame special issue in our agency annual report on #native #nongame fishes in Oklahoma. Thanks, @margaretdocker.bsky.social
Nate (left) holds a paddlefish while Brian holds a bigmouth buffalo.
Today’s bycatch included a nice bigmouth buffalo. Along with #paddlefish, Oklahoma’s three buffalo species are the main focus of our #native #nongame program.
Crocodiles “live longer than the careers of the scientists studying them”
Such is also the case with #paddlefish, #sturgeon, and a myriad of #native #nongame fishes.

Also, @margaretdocker.bsky.social led a special journal issue on #nongame fishes for Environmental Biology of Fishes, which has 23 articles. Worth reading all of them.

The #nongame portion of our program was just established in July 2023, so our work this far has largely been collecting data. No substantive reports to share. However, we’ve done plenty on #bowfishing #management which is an important component. Take a look here- www.researchgate.net/profile/Jaso...
Sam hugs a giant bigmouth buffalo
Jackson cradles a nice bigmouth buffalo
I called my shot and told Sam and Jackson we’d catch Buffalo at this site and I was right. Caught three lunker bigmouth buffs. #nongame
Another nice bigmouth buffalo was caught in our paddlefish net.
The business end of a bigmouth buffalo
We managed to catch a 6” shad in 6” mesh nets. Pretty unlikely.
Today’s bycatch included another bigmouth buffalo #nongame in a site where I can always count on catching them. Also, we had a gizzard shad and a white crappie in addition to our typical giant flathead #catfish and blue catfish.

More good #nongame bycatch. This is another mondo bigmouth buffalo. Smaller than the one yesterday, but in better shape. For some reason, my posture makes it look heavier than it is. Just tired. 😖

A close up of a bigmouth buffalo
Today’s bycatch included a massive bigmouth buffalo. #nongame
At 42 lbs, this ranks among the biggest we’ve seen.
I dunno if this paper is the one I’m “most known for”, but it was pretty dang needed in that moment. Lots of great research attention on #bowfishing and #native #nongame #fisheries #management has followed.

Devlin holds a smallmouth buffalo and Caleb holds a paddlefish from our nets today.
These are the two focal species of our program- #paddlefish and smallmouth buffalo. #native #nongame

Today’s bycatch wasn’t just catfish. We caught a nice freshwater drum and a smallmouth buffalo. #nongame
More baby steps towards #bowfishing #management in Oklahoma. #nongame
