This zine we displayed at NORFest National Open Research Forum at the Royal Irish Academy came from one of our ENGAGED collective intelligence workshops. It asks a simple question that kept coming up. How do we build real capacity for open research. Not just awareness or policy alignment. Actual capacity to do things differently. People told us capacity is built through time, support, shared practice, and genuine collaboration. It needs space to learn together, not just instructions handed down. It needs resourcing that recognises culture change is real work, not something extra squeezed in on top. Systematic change doesn’t happen by accident. Researchers, partners, and communities are often working in isolation. Even when they share the same values. Even when they want the same outcomes. So change feels slow and heavy. This zine is a reminder that culture change is not a policy exercise. It’s people choosing to collaborate, support each other, and back the work that aligns with shared values. It’s practical. Michael Foley spoke about our use of zines in the collective intelligence workshops. It landed because it’s simple and human. Zines let people express what they actually think and feel, not just what they think they’re supposed to say in a workshop. It cuts through the performance layer. You get honesty, nuance, humour, frustration, hope. People make sense of open research in their own language. That’s where the real insight sits. We’re not collecting data. We’re listening to people making meaning together. If that’s the kind of research culture you care about, stay with us.
