The lowering crane shot explicitly gives us Alex’s POV — notice every time the scene cuts to the three waiting Nazis, it’s from a shot of Alex looking at them — and this instills in us the sinking feeling Alex has as he descends into his own personal hell.
There’s marvelous intercutting in this scene from #Notorious as Alex (Claude Rains) walks down the stairs with Alicia and Devlin (Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant).
