NASA's Artemis 2 moon astronauts are 'fortunate' to have a private space toilet - Apollo crews pooped in plastic bags Luckily for the Artemis 2 astronauts, space-toilet technology has advanced a bit in the past half century. The Artemis 2 mission, which is currently targeting an April 1 liftoff, will send four people on a 10-day trip around the moon in NASA's Orion capsule. It will be the first crewed flight to lunar realms since the Apollo 17 mission back in December 1972. The Apollo astronauts did their business in the open, peeing into a roll-on cuff and pooping into plastic bags in the presence of their crewmates. But the Artemis 2 spaceflyers — NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen — will have access to a bona fide bathroom. Article continues below "We're pretty fortunate as a crew to have a toilet with a door on this tiny spacecraft," Hansen said in a video explainer about Orion's bathroom that was posted on YouTube last October. It's "the one place that we can go during the mission where we can actually feel like we're alone for a moment," he added. This sanctuary is not very spacious; it's about the size of a lavatory on a small passenger jet, according to Lockheed Martin, which built...

'We work for them, too': Artemis 2 moon mission is for everyone, NASA astronaut Victor Glover says (video) Victor Glover says he wants to listen to all audiences learning about his upcoming moon mission — especially those people who don't usually pay attention to space exploration. NASA astronaut Victor Glover told Space.com that he doesn’t think much about milestones for the Artemis 2 mission, which is scheduled to launch no earlier than April 1 — even though it will make him the first Black person ever to leave low Earth orbit (LEO). His priority, aside from training for a safe mission, is sharing the experience with different communities. Glover served as pilot on Crew-1, SpaceX's first operational astronaut mission to the International Space Station. He spent 168 days in space on that flight, conducting four spacewalks. Glover is also an aviator with combat experience for the U.S. Navy, a former test pilot for programs such as the F/A‐18 Hornet and the holder of several advanced engineering and science degrees. Next up for him: the moon. Article continues below Artemis 2 also includes NASA commander Reid Wiseman, NASA mission specialist Christina Koch (who will become the first woman to leave LEO) and Canadian Space Agency mission specialist Jeremy Hansen (the first non-American to leave LEO). 'We're all on this journey together:' Who are the Artemis 2 astronauts launching to the moon? What does it mean to be the first humans in decades to fly to the moon? The Artemis 2 astronauts will do just that on their historic mission around the moon, which could launch as soon as April 1. They are NASA's Reid Wiseman (the Artemis 2 commander), Victor Glover (pilot) and Christina Koch (mission specialist), as well as Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen (mission specialist). Much of the crew's time is necessarily occupied by training: sitting in simulators, doing practice launch days and splashdowns, and spending hours discussing how to live in their Orion spacecraft and accomplish the piloting and science they want to get done. Article continues below It will be a busy 10-day mission, in which the quartet will be the first humans to fly Orion — and the first people since 1972 to leave Earth's orbit for a trip around the moon. They and their ground-support teams also are aiming to set up for future Artemis missions — especially Artemis 4, which is scheduled to land astronauts on the moon in 2028. In a few words, this makes the astronauts busy indeed. But the crew has also talked about the importance of the mission to...

Making Canadian history: Artemis 2 astronaut Jeremy Hansen is ready for his epic moon mission Jeremy Hansen grew up in a world with no Canadian astronauts. Soon, he'll become the first person from his country to fly around the moon. Jeremy Hansen, then a Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot with NORAD flight experience, was selected to be an astronaut by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 2009. He didn't get a seat on a mission until Artemis 2, whose crew was announced in 2023. That 14-year gap sounds long, but Hansen was busy. On top of normal support for other missions, he helped develop tools to fix a dark-matter detector on the International Space Station, he advised Canadian space policy-makers, and he was the first Canadian to manage the training schedule for all astronauts (American and Canadian) selected in the 2017 astronaut class. Hansen is so well-respected that, after his selection for the Artemis 2 crew, then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave him a "geeking-out" congratulations call. Hansen had to wait so long to fly in large part because the CSA contributes a less-than-3% share to ISS activities, which results in an astronaut mission roughly every six years for the agency at current flight rates. Hansen's seat on Artemis 2 came from Canada's contribution...

Astronaut's medical scare remains a space mystery The astronaut who prompted NASA’s first medical evacuation earlier this year said on Friday that doctors still do not know why he suddenly fell sick at the International Space Station. Four-time space flier Mike Fincke said he was eating dinner on Jan. 7 after prepping for a spacewalk the next day when it happened. He could not talk and remembers no pain, but his anxious crewmates jumped into action after seeing him in distress and requested help from flight surgeons on the ground. “It was completely out of the blue. It was just amazingly quick,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press from Houston’s Johnson Space Center. Fincke, 59, a retired US Air Force colonel, said the episode lasted about 20 minutes, and he felt fine afterward. He said he still does. He never experienced anything like that before or since. Doctors have ruled out a heart attack, and Fincke said he was not choking, but everything else is still on the table and could be related to his 549 days of weightlessness. He was five months into his latest space station stay when the problem struck like “a very, very fast lightning bolt.” “My crewmates definitely saw...

Artemis 2 astronauts are launching to the moon on April 1: Watch it live NASA's first human moon mission in 50-plus years is ready for liftoff, and you can watch it leave Earth live. Artemis 2 will launch four astronauts for a round-the-moon mission no earlier than April 1 at 6:24 p.m. EDT (2224 GMT). You can watch it live here at Space.com, courtesy of NASA; coverage will begin at 12:50 p.m. EDT (1650 GMT). The mission will initially rocket to low Earth orbit from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying NASA's Reid Williams (commander), Victor Glover (pilot) and Christina Koch (mission specialist), along with mission specialist Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Article continues below If all goes to plan, about 24 hours after launch, the Orion capsule carrying those astronauts will conduct a crucial "trans-lunar injection" burn, which will send them to the moon — a realm no humans have visited since 1972. Artemis 2 will serve as the first crewed checkout of the Space Launch System rocket (which flew once before with the uncrewed Artemis 1, in 2022) and the Orion spacecraft (which also flew uncrewed twice: to Earth orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta IV rocket in 2014 and to lunar orbit on Artemis 1). Artemis 2 astronauts arrive at KSC WASHINGTON — The four Artemis 2 astronauts arrived in Florida March 27 for final preparations ahead of a launch still scheduled as soon as April 1. The four Artemis 2 astronauts — Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — flew from Ellington Field in Houston to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on NASA T-38 jets. They were accompanied by the two backups for the mission, Andre Douglas and Jenni Gibbons. The astronauts arrived five days before the earliest launch opportunity for Artemis 2, a two-hour window that opens at 6:24 p.m. Eastern. There are additional two-hour windows daily through April 6. NASA has provided limited updates on progress toward launch since the mobile platform carrying the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft returned to Launch Complex 39B March 20, following repairs in the Vehicle Assembly Building to restore the flow of helium into the upper stage. A top NASA official said in a recent interview that launch preparations have been going smoothly. “I am not tracking any big issues, not even any small issues, that are in our way for next week,” said Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for exploration systems development, on the sidelines...

Artemis II astronauts arrive at Kennedy Space Center ahead of next week's launch Before the four astronauts of the Artemis II mission travel farther from Earth than any human ever has, they first had to get to the launch site. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen arrived from Houston at 2:15 p.m. to Kennedy Space Center as they target a launch as early as Wednesday evening. The quartet along with their backups, NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jenni Gibbons, have been in quarantine since March 18. All six arrived to the former Space Shuttle Landing Facility flying in on NASA T-38 jets where they were joined on the tarmac by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and other officials. “Hey, let’s go to the moon!” Wiseman said to hoots from the crowd of media gathered at the site. This is their third time having entered quarantine with February and March launch opportunities that fell through. “I think for the crew, we focus on training, readiness, safety, and so, we’ve known that that was a possibility the entire time,” Glover said. “But our families we have really turned to to make it possible. … I really just wanted to focus on...

Mystery medical episode that left astronaut unable to speak shows one of NASA's biggest risks as moon missions ramp up As NASA prepares to send four astronauts around the moon for the 10-day Artemis II mission, a veteran space flier's unexplained illness in orbit is spotlighting one of the biggest risks of deep-space travel: the need for medical systems in case of emergencies. NASA astronaut Michael Fincke said a sudden episode aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in January left him unable to speak and forced NASA's first-ever medical evacuation from the orbiting laboratory. Doctors have ruled out a heart attack, Fincke told the Associated Press, but they still don't know what caused the medical issue. NASA was able to get Fincke (along with the three other members of the crew) back to Earth relatively quickly from the ISS. But that may not be the case for the longer lunar missions the agency envisions under the Artemis program. As NASA works toward building a lasting human presence on and around the moon — including plans for a $20 billion lunar base — unexplained medical events like Fincke's may become harder to dismiss as one-off scares. Article continues below "It was completely out of the blue. It was just amazingly quick," Fincke said, according to the Associated Press. "My crewmates definitely...

What to know about NASA's Artemis II moon mission: Space shuttle parts, delays, astronauts, more CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA’s now-delayed Artemis II mission is the second phase of a series of missions ultimately aimed at sending humans to Mars. Artemis II will send four astronauts around the moon in the first crewed flight test of the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion Spacecraft. April launch NASA’s long-awaited moonshot with astronauts is off until April 1 because of a helium flow issue that forced the rocket to return to the Vehicle Assembly Building. It was the second delay for the rocket, which was also delayed in February after hydrogen fuel leaks that marred the dress rehearsal. That problem also delayed the Space Launch System rocket’s debut three years ago. That first test flight was grounded for months because of a hydrogen leak. [SEE 2022 COVERAGE BELOW] Until the exasperating hydrogen leaks, the space agency had been targeting as soon as the first weekend of February 2026 for humanity’s first trip to the moon in more than half a century. “As always, safety remains our top priority,” NASA’s new administrator Jared Isaacman said via X. “We will only launch when we believe we are as ready to undertake this historic mission.” SLS rocket, Orion capsule...

Live Science Today: Jaw-dropping first glimpse of sperm whale birth and how NASA is turning astronauts into test subjects Splash landing Researchers have filmed a sperm whale giving birth while being assisted by 10 other females in her social unit. It's the first time an event of this kind has ever been seen in non-primates. The birth, captured by airborne drones in July 2023, took place over the course of an hour, during which time females surrounded the mother and newborn in a protective circle, taking turns to raise the calf to the surface — giving it time for its flukes to unfurl and acquire its own natural buoyancy control. Sperm whale social groups are matriarchies, with life-long bonds formed between mothers, daughters, grandmothers and unrelated females. The males, meanwhile, primarily roam the oceans alone, creating one of the most extreme geographical separations between the sexes in nature. The trend Under pressure It's been a busy time for NASA, with the announcement that the agency plans to build a permanent lunar base and construct a nuclear-powered rocket. The plans were revealed just a week before the planned launch of its crewed Artemis II rocket to the moon. The Artemis program has been touted as a test for critical systems before an eventual attempt to send humans to Mars, but...

Astronauts will 'absolutely be test subjects': NASA's moon plans pose big questions - and big risks Mars is out; the moon is in. And this time, we may be going there to stay. On Tuesday (March 24), NASA administrator Jared Isaacman announced new plans to build a "sustained human presence" on the moon, complete with a permanent lunar base. Construction of humanity's new home away from Earth could begin as soon as 2027, Isaacman said. The announcement came just a month after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk similarly ditched his company's plans to visit Mars in favor of establishing a "lunar self-growing city" within the next 10 years. Article continues below It's an exciting prospect — but scientists say lunar colonization won't be as simple as packing up and lifting off. The moon's environment is harsh: think razor-sharp, electrified dust and a constant stream of radioactive particles travelling at light speed. Scientists still aren't sure how this increased dose of cosmic radiation, coupled with the moon's weaker gravitational pull, relative to Earth, will affect the human body in the medium- to long-term. And then there's technological feasibility: Where will astronauts live, and with what resources? At the moment, these big questions are still awaiting answers that may not arrive in time for NASA and Musk's proposed plans...
