Artemis II astronauts have minor toilet trouble on their way towards the Moon Nasa is set to send humans deeper into space than ever before, but there's one piece of technology that still has some kinks - the Orion space capsule's toilet. Since launching from Earth on Wednesday, the four astronauts aboard the Artemis II mission's Orion capsule have had some intermittent issues with their toilet. At one point on Saturday, the toilet was unable to dump its waste overboard, possibly due to a frozen vent line, Nasa said. The astronauts have instead used an alternative system which involves collapsible plastic containers that collect their urine. Despite some toilet troubles, Artemis II is successfully into day five of the historic 10-day mission around the Moon. The four crew members - Nasa's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen - are in a small cabin about the size of a camper van, just 5m (15ft) wide and 3m (9ft) high. While speaking to Earth via a video link on Thursday, mission specialist Koch mentioned there had been a slight "priming" issue with the toilet. "I'm proud to call myself the space plumber, I like to say that it is probably the most important piece of equipment on...

Artemis II astronauts expected to reach far side of moon on Monday Astronauts on the historic Artemis II mission are expected to reach the far side of the moon on Monday, venturing deeper into space than any humans before. Nasa has reported satisfaction with progress toward the lunar fly-round since the team’s launch on Wednesday, with the three Americans and one Canadian on course to break the record for maximum range from Earth just as a total solar eclipse awaits. “The Earth is quite small, and the moon is definitely getting bigger,” the pilot Victor Glover reported after Artemis fired a key thruster to exit Earth’s orbit. The crew are the first astronauts bound for the moon in more than half a century, picking up where the Apollo programme left off in 1972. While the mission is already sending back valuable data and images, the crew have reported persistent problems with one of the Orion capsule’s most crucial pieces of equipment: the toilet. Until the lunar loo is fixed, mission control has instructed the astronauts to continue using backup urine collection bags. The commode malfunctioned after Wednesday’s liftoff and has only been working sporadically since then. Engineers suspect ice may be blocking the line that is preventing urine from completely flushing overboard...

Artemis II live: Astronauts describe seeing the far side of the moon for the first time Former deputy administrator of NASA, Pamela Melroy, has said proposed cuts to NASA's budget are "not the right decision". The White House is proposing a $5.6bn (£4.24bn) cut to NASA's budget for 2027 - 36% of its entire budget. Speaking to Sky News, Melroy argued that: "The payback of science, just as we learned during the Apollo missions, is much higher [than the costs]". "Space technology is critical for the future, taking the next steps, not just building a moon base, but going on to Mars," she added. The space veteran believes that other components are also important. "We have to continue science in low-Earth orbit, because we'll be spending most of the time on the way to Mars in microgravity." She says hypersonics (flying at five times the speed of sound), mean that air and space are beginning to blur, which requires continued support of aeronautics. "All of these pieces fit together, and they all have to be funded to make the best use for the taxpayer of the money that we're spending." Pamela Melroy says it was "incredible" that Artemis II "made it off on the first try". "First of all, the weather cooperated. But even more than...

Artemis 2 astronauts are about to see one of the rarest skywatching sights of all - a solar eclipse from beyond the moon The Artemis 2 astronauts will get a rare skywatching treat on Monday (April 6). The quartet will see a total solar eclipse that evening as they slingshot around the moon's far side, in a flyby that breaks humanity's all-time distance record. And that eclipse will be something that none of us stuck on terra firma have ever seen. (And, to be clear, groundbound viewers won't see this one; it will be visible only to the Artemis 2 crew.) "From our vantage point, the moon and the sun in the sky appear approximately the same size," NASA's Kelsey Young, Artemis science flight operations lead, said during a press conference on Saturday (April 4). But Artemis 2's Orion capsule "has a much different view than we do," she added. "And so the moon appears much, much, much larger in their view than it does from us here on Earth." As a result, the sun will disappear from Artemis 2's view for about 53 minutes on Monday — about seven times longer than the maximum period of totality possible for eclipses seen from Earth. Artemis 2's total solar eclipse will begin Monday at about 8:35 p.m. EDT (0035 GMT on April 7), 90...

The breakout star of NASA's Artemis 2 mission to the moon isn't an astronaut - it's the space toilet HOUSTON — Talk about a looky loo. As the four astronauts of NASA's Artemis 2 mission to the moon close in on their historic lunar flyby — the first by a human crew in more than 53 years — an unusual star has risen aboard their Orion moon ship. But it's not an astronaut — it's the space toilet. That moon loo has been part of the Artemis 2 conversation since day one of the mission, when its urine function went offline and was fixed by mission specialist Christina Koch, with guidance from Mission Control. "I'm proud to call myself the space plumber," Koch told reporters in a live video interview on Friday (April 3). "I like to say that it is probably the most important piece of equipment on board. So we were all breathing a sigh of relief when it turned out to be just fine." But the toilet wasn't fine. Or at least, not 100% fine. In the days that followed, the astronauts reported an odd "burning smell" coming from Orion's hygiene bay" — essentially a small bathroom compartment about the size of a small jet's lavatory. The smell reminded the crew of the odor from an...

Earth in rear-view of Artemis II astronauts Artemis II astronauts have crossed the halfway point between Earth and the moon as they race towards a planned lunar flyby, and NASA has released the first images of Earth captured from inside the Orion spacecraft. As the astronauts settled down to sleep early on Sunday after rounding off the fourth day of their 10-day mission, they were nearly 322,000km (200,000 miles) from Earth and 132,000km (82,000 miles) from the moon, according to NASA’s online dashboard. The United States space agency published photographs taken from the capsule, including a full view of Earth showing a glowing orb of deep blue oceans and swirling clouds. The four-person crew is expected to swing around the far side of the moon early this coming week, a manoeuvre not attempted in more than 50 years. The next major milestone in the journey is expected overnight from Sunday into Monday US time when the crew is due to enter what NASA calls the “lunar sphere of influence”, the point at which the moon’s gravity exerts a stronger pull on the spacecraft than Earth’s. If all goes to plan, Orion’s sweep around the moon could see the astronauts travel farther from Earth than any human in...

Where is Artemis II? NASA astronauts near the moon for first time in more than 50 years The Artemis II astronauts have surpassed the “two thirds” point of their mission to loop around the moon and fly back to Earth. As of 10:15 A.M. EDT on Sunday, the Orion spacecraft was more than 211,000 miles from Earth and about 68,500 miles from the moon. Day Four of the mission began with the crew waking up to the opening lines from Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club”—sadly, NASA cut the music right before the chorus, prompting commander Reid Wiseman to say what many of us watching were thinking: “we were all eagerly awaiting the chorus.” On Saturday the crew—Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen—began preparing in earnest for their lunar flyby, which is set for Monday, April 6. Each of the four astronauts has assigned lunar geography targets to observe during that approach, when capsule will swing as close as around 4,000 miles from the moon’s surface. At that time, our natural satellite will be the same apparent size as a basketball held at arm’s length. And already, the crew saw parts of the moon’s far side for the first time, Koch said on the NASA livestream of the mission. On supporting science...

Artemis 2 astronauts see Earth in the rear-view mirror | Space photo of the day for April 3, 2026 The Artemis 2 astronauts have shared a view that the billions of us stuck on Earth will never get firsthand: a gorgeous shot of our home planet shining like a sapphire in the blackness of space. What is it? This photo shows Earth as seen from Artemis 2's Orion spacecraft, which on Thursday evening (April 2) aced a crucial engine burn that took it out of Earth orbit and toward the moon. The Artemis 2 astronauts — NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and the Canadian Space Agency's Jeremy Hansen — have since been watching Earth recede into the distance, and NASA shared one of their photos today (April 3) on the social media site X. "We see our home planet as a whole, lit up in spectacular blues and browns. A green aurora even lights up the atmosphere. That's us, together, watching as our astronauts make their journey to the moon," NASA officials wrote in the X post. Why is it amazing? The photo by itself is amazing enough, showing our planet as it truly is — a shimmering, fragile outpost of life in a vast and dark cosmos. But the connection to Artemis 2 makes it...

As Artemis II astronauts speed toward the moon, the lunar loo is again on the fritz Now more than halfway to the moon, the Artemis II astronauts prepared for their historic lunar fly-around to push deeper into space than even the Apollo astronauts. On the downside, their toilet is on the blink again. The three Americans and one Canadian are set to reach their destination Monday, photographing the mysterious lunar far side as they zoom around. It is the first moon-bound crew in more than 53 years, picking up where NASA’s Apollo program left off. “The Earth is quite small, and the moon is definitely getting bigger,” reported pilot Victor Glover, a Pomona native. Until the Orion capsule’s bathroom is fixed, Mission Control has instructed the astronauts to break out more of the backup urine collection bags. The so-called lunar loo malfunctioned following Wednesday’s liftoff and has been hit-and-miss ever since. A version of the Artemis II toilet was tested on the International Space Station several years ago. Engineers suspect ice may be blocking the line that is preventing urine from completely flushing overboard. The toilet is still open for No. 2 business. Debbie Korth, NASA’s Orion program deputy manager, said the astronauts have also reported a smell coming from the bathroom, which is buried in...

Artemis 2 moon astronauts will try to recreate Apollo 8's historic 'Earthrise' photo during April 6 flyby On Christmas Eve 1968, the crew of NASA's Apollo 8 moon mission captured the "Earthrise" photograph, which is perhaps the most famous image ever taken from space. Soon, the astronauts of Artemis 2 will try to replicate it during their own flight around the moon. Artemis 2 will perform its flyby around the moon's far side on Monday (April 6), more than 57 years after Apollo 8 became the first mission to take humans around the moon. During their lunar loop, the Artemis 2 astronauts will aim to recreate the Earthrise image, in the hope that the new photo can have the same unifying effect that the original did. Earthrise was more than simply a photograph. Its depiction of Earth's blue marble rising in the distance above the barren lunar surface illustrated how fragile our world really is amidst the vastness of space, and how, despite our differences, all of us share one planet. Taken three years into the United States' direct involvement in the Vietnam War, during an era in which environmental concerns were beginning to gain ground, Earthrise became the poster child for anti-war and pro-environment campaigners. The photograph was unplanned and unexpected. Unlike Artemis 2, which will...

Artemis 2 astronaut Victor Glover delivers inspiring Easter message on the way to the moon (video) The parallels between the Artemis 2 and Apollo 8 moon missions now include a stirring holiday message. As they circled the moon on Dec. 24, 1968, the three Apollo 8 astronauts read the first 10 verses of the Book of Genesis during a live TV broadcast that reached an estimated 25% of Earth's population. Mission commander Frank Borman wrapped up the reading with these words: "And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth." On Saturday (April 4), as Artemis 2's Orion capsule sped toward the moon, a CBS News reporter asked mission pilot Victor Glover if he wished to share any Easter thoughts with those of us here on Earth. "I don't have anything prepared. I'm glad you brought it up, though; I think these observances are important," Glover responded. Then he gave us some words that showed how thoughtful and eloquent he is, and how well he can think on his feet. "You guys are talking to us because we're in a spaceship really far from Earth, but you're on a spaceship called Earth that was created...

'Not the moon that I'm used to seeing': Artemis II astronauts describe seeing the far side HOUSTON — The Artemis II astronauts are now more than halfway to the moon and have caught their first glimpses of the lunar far side. In an interview with NBC News from space, NASA astronaut Christina Koch described seeing the moon out the window of the Orion capsule and realizing that it looked different from what she was accustomed to on Earth. “The darker parts just aren’t quite in the right place,” she said. “And something about you senses that is not the moon that I’m used to seeing.” Koch said that she and her crewmates, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, compared their views to their study materials to understand what they were seeing. “That is the dark side. That is something we have never seen before,” Koch said. Wiseman, Koch, Glover and Hansen launched Wednesday on a 10-day trip around the moon, becoming the first people to embark on a lunar mission in more than 50 years. The astronauts were also the first humans to lift off aboard NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule. They have been officially moon-bound since Thursday evening, when the spacecraft conducted a key engine burn...
