🌱 my spring garden hasn't really even done anything yet and I'm already thinking about my summer planting. Have to pick stuff that will thrive in the Texas summer heat. Second round of tomatoes/peppers, for sure, but okra (def), maybe black eyed peas? Winter squash also... πŸ€”

First time ever growing carrots! Now that I've tried it and been successful, I can learn how to optimize to get bigger carrots. I'm so excited! 🌱 #gardening #NTexas

Busy weekend in the garden 🌱! After 2 truckloads of dirt that I had to move, the new beds are filled. Then I did ALL THE PLANTING/SOWING! 😁 Last thing is to finish barricading the sides of the beds until I can get more chicken wire, to keep all the 2 and 4 legged creatures out.

Things that made me happy today (and this past weekend)
- all of my seeds have germinated in my hydroponic thingy! 🌱
- built three of my new garden beds, three more to go
- Bad Bunny show at halftime (ofc)
- planting broccoli for the first time πŸ˜‚
- pruning fruit trees 🀞

🌱 Finally got 2 blackberry bushes into the ground after talking about it for two years. Planted some broccoli for the first time as well. Warm weather now = building garden beds tomorrow! #gardening #NTexas

#NTexas right now: we did it, y'all! Winter is over! Time to garden and grow shit!

NTexas = me. Even though I know better. 🀣

My silly dog likes the ice just as much as she loves snow. We have about 4" of sleet and snow with a hard crust and she cannot get enough of rolling on it. #NTexas

We are set for supplies for the ice storm in #NTexas, but I underestimated my liquor supply. I think I'll have my last martini tonight, there's no wine or beer, and probably won't be able to go anywhere until Tuesday at the earliest. Whatever shall I do?

At least there's plenty of coffee and tea.

3 stacked pictures: the bottom one is an outdoor table covered in ice and snow with a citronella candle and small toy; the middle picture is a video of the toy, which is a yellow Minion laying in the ice; top picture is an extreme close-up of the Minion toy, looking scared.

It's a terrible collage, but my all-time favorite picture from the cobblestone ice event in #NTexas in 2013. The Minion's expression just captures our feeling about ice/snow in the South US perfectly. 🀣

🌱 Winter has decided to briefly stop by #NTexas, but in the next couple of weeks, I think it's fruit tree pruning time. I've never done it, so I'm very intimidated. Watching lots of videos, but any recs showing pruning on young trees, I'd appreciate it! Peach and apple, 1 & 2 y.o. trees.

🌱 It's early, so we'll see what happens, but this tiny flower made me smile. A grape hyacinth, maybe? Can't remember.

Last year, spinach and lettuce failed miserably because I didn't know what I was doing. Research, YouTube videos, and actually seeing someone separate and transplant lettuce, and lookit! πŸ₯° 🌱

I sowed carrots this morning, which I'm pretty sure was both too late and too early in #NTexas. I've never grown them, so we'll see what happens. Onions are already out to buy, a little early. My gardening calendar is going to reset once the onions go in the ground in 3 weeks. 🌱 #gardening

I don't think I want to be a homesteader, but looking for ways to improve my gardening seems to have led me down that path on YouTube. It's fascinating, for sure, and kudos to those that do it.

I need more expertise in growing in North Texas, though, in the channels I follow.

🌱 I love community plant groups. I got a free crepe myrtle (I absolutely love them) that a lady had already spent three years growing and tending. She just flat out didn't have room for it. Don't worry, it will be lovingly tended in my yard. πŸ₯° #gardening #NTexas

🌱 No pictures cause I'm lazy, but the fall green beans have started to pop! And for first time, I've done a fall planting of tomatoes (pulled the spring determinates when they were done, planted new in July). The Celebrity plants are growing like crazy, the Roma... not so much. 😬 #gardening #NTexas

🌱 I finally pulled all of my pepper plants and sowed green beans today. Some general clean up in the garden beds, as well as talking to my apple tree to try to figure out what's wrong with it. Getting beds ready for leafy greens in the next couple of weeks! #gardening #NTexas

A mess of weed grass (Johnson grass), a white pot, and a wire fence with green t-posts. In front of the fence there is a pile of hardwood mulch, put down to kill the grass so a flower bed can be built there. The flower bed will eventually extend the length of the fence, which is about 20 feet.

A backyard with half brown grass. Two outdoor couches are in the middle of the picture, with two green lids for a septic tank towards the foreground. The main space is mostly grass, which will be covered with cardboard and hardwood mulch, to kill the grass. A native/adapted plant pollinator garden will eventually take up a lot of this space.

🌱 It's too hot to plant anything now, and we are in the "let's just survive the summer" part of the year. Fall veggies are in and covered with shade cloth, native plants are doing their thing, so what do I do? Start planning for more beds. Cardboard and mulch time! #gardening #NTexas

I should only plan out my garden bed extensions in July and August (North Texas), not April. Maybe that will encourage me to keep it reasonable in size. 🀣 🌱 #gardening #NTexas

🌱 The summer heat is most definitely here. I need to put up my shade cloth. I also put up 12 more pints of pickles and have pretty much come to the end of the cucumber vines. I'm going to pull those soon, let the bed rest for a little bit, then sow winter squash. #gardening #NTexas

4 large cucumbers next to a Gala apple for scale. The cucumber on the left is the largest and almost white. It has a very large girth, which leads to a lot of jokes. The other three cucumbers are all dark green, but longer or rounder than normal.

Raised bed with healthy pumpkin vines extending out of the bed to the ground.

Question for #gardening feed, specifically those that attempt pumpkin vines in a raised bed: how big is your raised bed, does it contain the vines, and what do you do to keep them contained, if not?

Context: raised bed that is 3'x6', wrapped in chicken wire to keep chickens and dogs out. 🌱 #NTexas
