A summer evening on the Nagara River in Gifu, and Ukai fishermen and their cormorants are out on the water. Men in small wooden boats maintain small bonfires in baskets suspended over the calm water, to attract the sweetfish below. Trained cormorants on leads swim nearby; looking to the fisherman, the birds will dive to retrieve the fish. Beyond the river, shadowy mountains rise in a dim, starless night sky.
