‘I am currently living my dream music wise’ – TopCheri Walvis Bay gifted Namibia two top music bands in the form of Children from Pluto and Deadwood before independence – now the harbour town is basking in the success of another musician, Monica Pineas, known as TopCheri. The Kuisebmond-born songstress has carved a very successful music career for herself. “Unlike some people, I don’t come from a family of musicians. In fact, a music career was the last thing on my mind when I came to Windhoek looking for greener pastures like many other young people are doing today,” TopCheri told The Weekender. “I only started music eight years ago. I was first a full-time entertainment journalist with The Villager. My break came after Dion of the kwaito trio PDK heard me singing on the set of the comedy movie ‘Captain Kalola’. I was playing the leading female role opposite Tate Buti.” TopCheri, who used to sing in the Hosiana Evangelical Lutheran Church Youth Choir, says Dion invited her to the studio – and the rest is history as he went on to record her first single ‘Victoria’ which received resounding reviews from the public. Her first album, ‘The Matrimony’, was released seven years ago, while the fourth ‘Tithe’ was dropped in 2022, and the popular singer is currently in the studio working on a new song. TopCheri, real name Monica Pineas “There is absolutely no rest in this industry and one can’t rest on your laurels because the other artists are also bringing out new stuff. I am recording with different producers, but Andrew on the Beat is still my resident producer. “Right now I just spend most of my time in the studio recording new music. My recent single ‘They Wanna Do’ was released three weeks ago and I must say that it appealed very well to the public. Now we are busy working on my next offering ‘Angelina’,” she says. In between her recordings, TopCheri, who seems to be the go-to artist for corporate gigs, mentions late South African superstar Brenda Fassie and Namibia’s award-winning queen of the stage Lady May as the two singers that inspired her to become a singer. “However,” she says, “my music idol was kwaito master The Dogg. I was so into his music that I was even called Monica Morocky in the streets of Kuisebmond. Like The Dogg, I love to express my life’s journey, which was also full of setbacks in my music. “My family does not believe in fairytales and stuff like dreams coming true. We only believed that if you have to appear on TV you have to be connected or you have to know someone to be in the music industry.” She says she is proud to have proven to her family and friends back home that anything in life is possible if you work hard. “I am not only releasing music today, but I am also in my music videos and my videos are on YouTube. Most excitingly, my videos are also aired on the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, and my family and friends can proudly tell people that I am their very own,” she says. “Making music is not the only project that takes up all my energy. Thanks to the tremendous support from corporate Namibia I still host my TopCheri Kiddies Concert which has become very popular among the youth. This year’s event is once again slated for November.” The annual event provides a platform for children to showcase their talent. They host the event, have their own stalls to sell their goodies, sing, dance and do gymnastics. The Afro-pop star is also a partner in Plug A Creative, an online marketing agency that does marketing for different companies. TopCheri remembers her shows in Zambia and Germany. In the midst of all those shows, TopCheri was also invited by Namibian fellows in the United States to perform a live show in Louisville. The Namibian singer is calling upon Namibian foreign missions in the diaspora to help Namibian artists grow by inviting them over to network with artists from those countries. Exit Rockaz takes his art to the next level with ‘Rockaz 2.0’ Kwaito and urban musician David Shikalepo has announced his return to the scene with a new album, ‘Rockaz 2.0’. With over two decades in the industry, Exit’s journey from the dusty streets of Oshakati to global stages has been defined by reinvention and authentic Namibian flavour. Now, he presents an upgraded version of himself – lyrically, emotionally and sonically. “’Rockaz 2.0’ indicates a rebirth. It’s Exit reimagined. This project builds on everything I’ve done, but pushes the boundaries further than ever,” he says. Comprising 19 tracks, ‘Rockaz 2.0’ is a mix of kwaito, hip-hop, Afrobeat and Amapiano – yet it retains an Exit high-energy feel loved by fans. Exit says his inspiration comes from life itself. “The struggles, the triumphs, the love and growth – it’s all there. Each track tells a story,” he says. Working with leading producers such as Andrew on the Beat, Shiboi, DJ Chronic, Mjay (Drumkick Productions), and Greg (Tears Records), Exit describes each one as offering something different. “Andrew is a beast. Greg knows my brand inside-out. Mjay brings a crazy flavour – he’s the only Wambo I know from Keetmanshoop!” Exit says. “We’re in a creative and comfortable space.” A standout single is ‘Changes’, a contemplative take on self-growth. “It’s about learning from the past and embracing the future with hope,” Exit says. ‘Too Legit to Quit’ is an energising anthem of perseverance. “I’m still standing. I’m still going. I’m too legit to quit,” he adds. Then there’s ‘Solely the Best’, a tribute to love and those who uplift us. “It’s about celebrating people who bring out the best in you.” Exit says all the songs are based on real experiences – victories and defeats – are all bonded together by his own resolve to never give in. “This album speaks about determination, belief in oneself, and staying true to oneself. I also wish to express how important it is to stay true,” he states. The album is religion oriented. “What God blesses no man can damn. And shortcuts? That’s the quickest route to the cemetery.” A recent stint in the United Kingdom gave him further creative inspiration. “Seeing Namibians overseas sing every word brought back to mind that my music transcends borders. But Namibia will always be home.” Despite recent rumors of quitting music, Exit sets the record straight about his future: “I will never give up on music. It raised and still sustains me. ‘Rockaz 2.0’ is a reminder that my voice and journey are not yet over.” As a seasoned artist, Exit now sees his role differently. “I’m not just an entertainer anymore. I’m a leader in the industry and a mentor. I want to encourage young artists to believe in themselves and have confidence in their ability.” With more performances, visuals and mentorship initiatives on the horizon, Exit asserts this album isn’t just music – it is a movement. “Every time I release music, I’m speaking to my people. And ‘Rockaz 2.0’? That’s me screaming at the top of my lungs.” The post Exit Rockaz takes his art to the next level with ‘Rockaz 2.0’ appeared first on The Namibian.

Catching Up With Lize Ehlers Multiple award-winning singer and songwriter Lize Ehlers is a very busy woman. Apart from her monthly gigs at The Village Sunday Market, the trailblazer, also known as DJ Rise Ehlers, does the social Song Night Namibia calendar for Craft Cafe Bellissima as well. The 2019 Namibian Annual Music Awards (Namas) female artist of the year organises the artists and sound equipment for the weekly Who’s On Stage event, which features an artist every Friday and Saturday between 19h00 and 22h00 at Craft Cafe Bellissima in Windhoek’s Grove Mall area. “I draw a lot of inspiration from singing live. I always refer to performing live as my medicine and hope which drives me to keep going in my quest to achieve more,” she says. “Whether commanding a stage, curating space for marginalised voices, or igniting social change through music, some refer to me as an embodiment of artistry with purpose. I remain an unwavering champion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex and other (LGBTQI+) rights.” Ehlers, who is a private vocal coach and recording consultant, has played a pivotal role in creating one of the most vibrant and inclusive platforms for self-expression and empowerment in the country as co-chief executive of Drag Night Namibia. “My work with Drag Night goes beyond performance,” says Ehlers. “It is about safety, visibility and community, offering LGBTQI+ artists and allies a space where they can celebrate who they are, unapologetically and proudly.” Her advocacy has not gone unnoticed. She was crowned as the international extraordinary ally winner at the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association World Conference 2024, which came after she was honoured as Namibia’s best ally at the 2022 Spectrum Awards. “These accolades are a testament to my unwavering continued commitment to equality, representation and amplifying queer voices through art and activism.” Her artistic prowess is not only limited to music, as the eight-time Namas winner has also proven to have a special love for film and theatre. The fact that she was named best actress of the year on two occasions during the Namibian Theatre and Film Awards speaks volumes about her versatility as an artist. “As founder and director of Song Night, I am mentoring and nurturing countless emerging artists, giving them a stage to develop their craft and step into their power. My belief that music is a tool for social change has shaped a generation of Namibian performers,” Ehlers notes. Many of these artists credit her as a defining influence in their careers. More so, Ehlers reinvents herself behind the decks, spinning beats that merge deep jazz, house, Afro-fusion and queer club culture, either as DJ Rise – ‘the Pulse of the Underground’; or as DJ Rise Ehlers – the resident Drag Night DJ and technical director. “Whether at an underground drag show, a festival or a pride event, my music is rebellion, joy and celebration wrapped into one hypnotic set,” she explains. Throughout all this fuss around her, Ehlers just dropped a new international single titled ‘Adam & Eve’ with Zambian producer The BeatBanger, and they are currently working on the music video of the song, to be released in June. There is no stopping the three-time socially responsible artist of the year as she is also the musical director of Sandy Rudd’s ‘Forty Years of Fabulous’ musical, which will take place at the National Theatre of Namibia on 16 and 17 May. She is also in the rocess of recording her first jazz album. A living icon of art and advocacy, Ehlers is more than an artist – she is a movement. From transforming the music industry to fighting for minority rights, her work is a blueprint for what it means to use art as a weapon of love, change and liberation. While everyone is fighting for the mic, Ehlers gives it away. Revolution and showing up are her mantras. Lize Ehlers is here to stay, slay and uplift. Khorixas poised for exciting ma /gaisa festival All roads will lead to Khorixas this weekend, where 11 of Namibia’s finest ma /gaisa artists will grace the Herbert Conradie Stadium for the inaugural Ma
/Gaisa Festival Volume 1. The star-studded event, which was made possible by organisers Watson Ndara and Elizabeth Gomaxas, will be held from 4 to 6 April. “It isn’t every day that Khorixas an event of this magnitude. We want to make sure that this inaugural festival is a resounding success, so that both the music fans and artists can look forward to next year’s event already,” Ndara says. “This is actually not the ideal line-up that we wanted but due to the unavailability of some of the musicians and due to budgetary constraints we are happy that we could actually pull some of the biggest names in the genre to the home of ma /gaisa music.” The people of Khorixas, and the surrounding farms and settlements, are known for their love of ma /gaisa. The line-ups billed over the two days of live music and the Sunday session will be graced by some of the top DJs in the business. “We have really outdone ourselves to secure the services of superstars like Ou Stakes, Kalux, Kaptain Tswazis, Marvtown, Pule, Lettie, Jaliza and Brumelda, who are not only high profile names in the ma /gaisa genre, but in the broader Namibian music scene as well,” Ndara notes. “These are the men and women who have made sure the genre remains relevant by constantly releasing albums with big hits. Some of their songs have won them awards on the big stages like the Namibian Annual Music Awards.” The live music shows are divided over two days, with Ou Stakes headlining the gig on Friday, with other stars like Brumelda, Marvtown and self-styled queen of ma /gaisa Lettie, expected to kick up a storm in her hometown. Other acts on Friday include Ice Star, THC DJs, Lebron and Radley and Oc Ebs. On Saturday, Kalux, the entertaining Kaptain Tswazi and crowd-favourite Pule are expected to drive the crowd crazy with the full support of Jaliza. Also in action on Saturday night are the likes of Kallo on the Beat and THC DJs, who are billed for both nights. “Patrons can also look forward to the Sunday session during which entry into the stadium will be free. We will also be treating those people who spend N$100 or more on beverages to free potjiekos,” says Ndara. “It is not always that Khorixas gets to see such a star-studded line-up of their favourite musicians during one festival. We are extremely excited and we are looking forward to staging one of the biggest live music shows ever by our own stars for our own people.” The organisers have also announced that there will be a kiddies’ corner with jumping castles, a swimming pool and other goodies. The main sponsors for the festival are CE Infinity Trading, The Hustle Continues and Piano Fest Namibia. Damage for the early birds is N$80 per day while N$100 is payable at the gate. Children have to fork out N$30 per day. The post Khorixas poised for exciting ma /gaisa festival appeared first on The Namibian.
