Full length view of the front of a long shaded blue evening dress. It has a bodice and overskirt of beaded motifs in blue and gold and a paler blue silk underskirt
What better for a rainy Friday (here at least!) than a spectacular gown from the generally spectacular wardrobe of Queen Maud of Norway. Dating to c1908 it incorporates an outer shell of sparkle over softer layers #nasjonalmuseet #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Full length view of a green Fortuny ensemble consisting of a long pleated dress with a velvet coat worn over the top that has been hand stencilled in gold
Oof, pour me into a Fortuny ensemble and mix me a cocktail please. My long-ish work commute felt longer than usual today but anyway, home now and the weekend is upon us. Happy Friday to you all. Late #1920s #nasjonalmuseet #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

A front and back view of a pale blue floral silk brocade dress with high waist and long sleeves that have a puff at the shoulder. It is fuller at the back and has a ruffle at the hem
The value of cloth was such, in the past, that recycling was a regular feature of sartorial life. Silk brocade worn in the 18th century has been completely repurposed here to fit the fashionable silhouette of the #1820s, too precious not to reuse #nasjonalmuseet #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
A long evening dress in shades of purple and silver. It consists of a beaded and embroidered tunic style overdress with short sleeves and black beaded roses. There is a purple silk bow centre front of the skirt which then falls to the deep purple silk underskirt
One of my favourite exhibitions was Style & Splendour at the #V&A in 2005. It demonstrated the possibilities of using dress to illuminate and contribute to the biography of the wearer, in this case Queen Maud of Norway. This, one of her early #1910s gowns #nasjonalmuseet #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Exhibit on New Nordic cuisine & aesthetics of place was fascinating but left me wondering: is this a ‘back-to-the-land’ model or more like a scene from the 2022 film The Menu—an extreme form of conspicuous consumption?

A side by side image of a navy and white striped dress with high waistline and navy detailing at waist, cuffs and neck alongside a black and white photograph of a similar gown
On the right is an early fashion photograph of a Paul Poiret gown from 1912, on the left a similar gown from around the same year. The influence of the directoire silhouette & vertical stripes appears in a few surviving garments, Poiret’s influence far-reaching #nasjonalmuseet #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Front and back view of a long orange gown with long gauze sleeves trimmed with rouleaux and ruffles of silk

Full length view of the back of the green silk mantua showing the pleated bodice and swagged and draped skirt
The scale of silk patterns in the #1720s was much larger than designs that followed later in the century. Mantuas such as this used fabric that featured the boldest of flora in great swirls, patterns that were then disrupted by perfect pleats #nasjonalmuseet #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
