'London, Wednesday 7th February, 24
Dear Martin,
I find myself quite at a loss as to what best to say. I wondered at first whether I should choose from among the innumerable heartfelt quotations about the virtues of letter writing, but I found it impossible to settle on just one that will wholly encapsulate the experience. Each one, much like letters themselves, reveal but one facet of the beauty. But surely, I thought, the very impossibility of the task must speak volumes of how treasured a gift the writing and receiving of letters is. Then I wondered if I could point to the vast historic significance of the United Kingdom's postal services, not least, the revolutionary introduction of the world's first postage stamp, a significance which the present course of actions would seem to betray, were it to continue. But then I was afraid that that must feel like an especially egregious example of teaching Grandmother to suck eggs...'
The letter to Martin Seidenberg, CEO of Royal Mail.
