The colossal, humorous, hyper-realistic sculpture of a pigeon cast in aluminum challenges the grandeur of traditional monuments-canonizing instead the familiar New York City street bird. The often derided and dismissed creatures were brought to the US from Europe in the 1800s and were kept as domesticated animals. Pigeons were most notably used as reliable and valiant message carriers, making them indispensable to the military during war. Argote's work recognizes this history indicating that, in fact, the now feral birds are likely more deserving of being placed on a pedestal and celebrated for their contributions to society than the historical figures who have been so honored. By highlighting their origins, Argote reminds viewers that even the pigeon, a New York fixture, initially migrated here and made the city their home.
