The dimly lit stairwell of the Natural Bridge Hotel. The dark walls are barely illuminated by single lights at each landing. This creates an eerie glow to the cramped passageway. The metal stair rails shine, reflecting the little light it is offered. The historic hotel is located in the Shenandoah Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It originated in the 1770's when Thomas Jefferson purchased Natural Bridge from England for 20 shillings. He built a two room-room log cabin, with one of the rooms reserved for guest, to accommodate visitors to one of the New World's most popular attractions. Over the centuries the hotel was expanded several times. In 1963, a devastating fire destroyed the site. The present-day hotel was opened in 1965. It embraces its vintage past but has been updated with modern amenities. It is a charming accommodation in a beautiful area of Virginia. Natural Bridge is a geological formation comprised of a 215-foot-high natural arch with an opening span of 90 feet. It is one of the oldest tourist destinations in the United States and considered one of the "Natural Wonders of the World.”
