Purwell Meadow is looking fantastic at the moment, with more Cuckoo Flowers than I've ever seen there before. And the Marsh Marigolds are looking splendid now too.

Path among trees with winter sun shining through the branches
Went out to see some trees before being cooped up in the car for hours.
This might look like the middle of a spooky wood but it's actually 5 minutes from a Lidl and right by the A15. You don't have to go far!

A barn full of people watching Nic give a talk.
Nic sat on a chair talking to an audience next to a big screen showing a hummingbird hawk-moth.
Very enjoyable session giving the keynote talk at the @cprecountryside.bsky.social Countryside Day and chatting to folk afterwards. Loved the children's art competition entries too! π€©

Digital painting of a regal ringneck snake, which is coiled in a way which shows the bright red and yellow belly of the snake, which contrasts with its blue-gray dorsal coloring.
September entry for #NearbyNature, the Regal Ringneck Snake. Business on the dorsal side, party on the ventral side. When threatened, it coils up tightly and displays its bright colors, usually curling the tip of its tail into a corkscrew. It emits musk as a defense but is not venomous.
A moth with red underwings and black wings with white and orange blotches.
On the way to talk about nearby nature, we found a Scarlet Tiger moth with a misformed wing in nettles by the side of the path.

Digital painting of a Great Basin Collared Lizard. The body is a sandy tan and gray with some darker red patches on the back and more orange yellow feet. It has two wide black bands on its neck.
My April art for Nearby Nature. The Great Basin Collared Lizard is usually easy to identify by the wide black bands on the neck. Itβs usually found in arid desert in the western U.S., and eats mostly arthropods but will eat small vertebrates if it can get them.

A tiny frog made of red cheese wax sits on the counter next to a Babybel cheese. Its throat pouch is inflated because it is calling.
@biographic.bsky.social you asked how your readers engage with science. I use @inaturalist.bsky.social as described in your newsletter. I also do the #NearbyNature challenge from @sarahmackattack.bsky.social where we share #SciArt critters from our neighborhood. I'm silly so I sculpt cheese wax. ππΏ

Digital drawing of two sandhill cranes, which are mottled gray and light brown birds with bright red masks over their eyes and the front of their heads.
My March #NearbyNature drawing of two sandhill cranes. These are large birds that stand up to 4.5 feet tall and can have wingspans of about seven feet. They migrate seasonally, forming huge flocks at their wintering areas.

Digital art of a red fox walking on a sidewalk in front of the sandstone panels of a Berlin bridge in the evening. Ornate swirls of black steel are emerging from his fur.
Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) for #NearbyNature inspired by both the bold foxes that run around all over Berlin (I even saw one waiting for traffic to stop in broad daylight.) and the Siemenssteg bridge's ornate swirls. It's one of my favorite places here and red foxes are one of my fave animals.

A tiny, bright green inchworm moving along a long piece of wet driftwood that has some sand stuck on it.
Today's #FebruArty prompt is "big and small" - this adorable inchworm worked hard to cross a huge piece of driftwood on the beach! #NearbyNature
A side view of a newly-emerged monarch butterfly with orange wings broken up by black veins, and white spots on the edges of his wings and on his body. He is holding on to my finger with his legs, which have tiny raindrops on them. He also has raindrops on his black fuzzy head next to his antennae. A garden is out of focus in the background.
This friend emerged from his chrysalis on a rainy morning, so I brought him inside to dry off before releasing him once the sun came back out in the afternoon. Here, he still has raindrops on his head and legs!

A color photograph of a groundhog taken through a sliding glass door. The groundhog is sitting up on their hind legs to see what we're up to inside the house. They have left nose smudges on the glass.
Today's #FebArt prompt is "groundhog glow" - this curious pal lived under my house and would knock on our sliding doors to say hello. (The smudges on the sliding door in this picture are from the groundhog's nose.)

Pencil sketch of a buzzard on a hedge top.
I forgot that I was going to try and do #NearbyNature this year so January is a little late. This is a common buzzard. I often see them flying about, or on fields getting worms, but on my drive to work this week there was this one.
