A small egg-shaped flower with a constricted opening at its tip. The receptacle is green and hairy.
From below, the four red petal tips can easily be seen, roughly forming a square with a hole in its center at the flower’s opening. Inside, yellow anthers crowd around a central pistil.
I don’t often notice these flowers before they wither and give rise to pale blueish berries. The blooms are numerous, but exceptionally tiny. The fruits are sparsely hairy and quite edible.
