The Trees have Ears and the Field has Eyes
Hieronymus Bosch, 1500
"One way to stop seeing trees, or rivers, or hills, only as 'natural resources,' is to class them as fellow beingsโas kinfolk.โ

I always think that ONE artist of the Hieronymus Bosch studio was responsible for all the musical instruments on the Garden triptychโฆ

Both works have a figure in crucifixion or semi-crucifixion pose. On the Van Weyden, Christ has been taken from the cross, and his feet are on a rectangular slab of his grave. The knees are together, slightly lifted. On the Bosch painting, the dead person is resting with his shoulders on a rectangular table block of wood of the same form. His knees are together and lifted.
Hieronymus Bosch seems to have been quite inspired by Rogier van Weydenโs Lamentation of ca. 1460-63,
now at the Uffizi Gallery, Florence; detail.

Scene from the right inside panel of the triptych The Haywain, which portrays Hell.
BUILDING ACTIVITIES IN HELL
refer to the growing influx of sinners into the dark abyss.
But Hieronymus Bosch chose specifically for the demons building a tower; so he may also refer to the biblical events at the Tower of Babylon.

Old Dutch saying:
โBedelaars scheuren hunne kleรชren,
om medelijden te verwekken.โ
[Beggars tear their clothes, to arouse pity]
=<1635 Har.1.p.36.
In this line, blindness & bandage are fake too. And children perhaps arenโt his own.

Of course, the most likely proverb for this scene by Bosch of ~1500 is:
โIemand in den aars kruipenโ documented <=1726
[โTo crawl up someone's assโ].
In similar ways used in art by the Breugel family 50-100 years after Bosch.

FOUNTAIN-MOUNTAIN FULFILLS
on the Haywain, imo, the same function as
Face-Rock on the Garden triptych.
They both symbolize the presence of the Devil (the Fallen Prince) in Eden.

A nun โhelpsโ a vomiting sinner. His produce drops in a pit with a dark fluid, in which can be seen several figuresโ heads. Quite possibly, the pit is Hell. The panel is more about Afterlife in general, and may include purgatory, ascend into Heaven (for a happy few), and more.
Her role is at least ambiguous:
is she a pious, caring person helping the poor sinner-
or is she just another demon,
cleansing him again & againโฆ

Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali was a great fan of Bosch, he could see the paintings in the Prado.
Perhaps the Pair in the Bubble inspired himโฆ

Detail of Boschโs Garden of Earthly Delights with giant fruits, some with people inside, an enormous mussel, yes you guessed it, with people inside, and larger than life birds, a butterfly and still more.
SOME 500 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE PAINTER BOSCH DIED-
and still itโs possible to find possible new meanings in his works.
