[ABA: dehumanizing child torture passed off as therapy]
I'm still reading through Steve #Silberman's #NeuroTribes. I'm currently nearing the end of the longest chapter, "Fighting the monster", of which the latter part is largely about Ole Ivar #Lovaas and the origins of #ABA. It makes for […]
Can you believe it's been a decade since #NeuroTribes came out? This groundbreaking, humane, endlessly entertaining history of autism and #neurodiversity now comes in a 10th anniversary edition, with a brand spanking new introduction by John Elder Robison:

Apropos of worlds within worlds. Lovely photo, marvelous notion. Only just finished @stevesilberman.bsky.social book #NeuroTribes, he must have found it pleasing to write.

“Being autistic does not mean being inhuman. But it means that what is normal for other people is not normal for me, and what is normal for me is not normal for other people,” -Jim Sinclair, quoted in #NeuroTribes

Reading Late Bloomer by Clem Bastow and she says #Neurotribes praised Asperger and made him more popular than previously.. Did I hallucinate where Silverman writes about how Asperger was a eugenicist who singled out the more disabled children to be killed?
More backstory (not from keynote): TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children) was the first statewide autism education program in the United States and the model for many other progressive programs since. Also from #NeuroTribes. #SNS25
Some TEACCH backstory: TEACCH founder Eric Schopler accused ABA therapy originator Ivar Lovaas of "front-loading his data by excluding 'low-functioning' children from his sample while favoring those with unusually high IQs," and selecting kids from higher SES backgrounds. (From #NeuroTribes.) #SNS25
I was so fortunate #NeuroTribes had just come out when my fam member was diagnosed. It was the first thing I read, so it’s the first framing I had and the one that’s informed my research, my understanding and my relationship with my fam the most. Thanks Steve💙
"Steve Silberman’s book #NeuroTribes goes deep into the history of how we define autism, how who qualifies as autistic has changed over time, why there’s no autism epidemic […] and has changed the way a lot of people think about autism. It’s a must-read."

One year on, and I still see you everywhere.
I love you, my friend.
Thank you.

I can't believe Steve has been gone for an entire, painful, awful year. I will always be grateful to him for seeing the joy and humanity in my son Leo, helping other people to see past autism stereotypes, and celebrating autistic people of all support levels—on their own terms. #NeuroTribes #autism
We lost @stevesilberman.bsky.social 1 year ago.
Steve wrote #NeuroTribes after asking, "why is it [mainstream autism] concerns are so divorced from the real problems that the people on the front lines of autism—autistic people & their families—were facing day to day?”

This digital graphic novel is a beautiful and enlightening glimpse into the experience of a neurodivergent teenager on a field trip to the aquarium, showing that it doesn't always take eye contact to be seen.

If you're doing inclusion and neurodivergent, neurodiversity you need to understand its history, its long, long history. Start maybe with #NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently By the Late Great Steve Silberman 👍
absolutely loved #neuroqueerheresies by nick walker, finally time to tackle #neurotribes by steve silberman. about halfway through today.
wild to see events in the book so closely mirrored irl right now.
#autism #actuallyautistic #neurodiversity
I wrote about this in my book We're Not Broken. I learned a lot about this from late friend @stevesilberman.bsky.social in his book #Neurotribes. I miss Steve so much.

“ #NeuroTribes is a masterclass in how to write about a #community when you are an outsider. First, Silberman began spending time with #autistic people early in his #research process rather than doing it at the end, or not at all": buff.ly/4hGgyZe

We #Autistics people have been on this earth as long as humans have . We have an actual history - look it up or better still
Read #Neurotribes ( updated version ) by #SteveSilberman .
Society is a rich tapestry of neurodiversity of which we #neurodivergent people …
The new #POTUS represents the #FourthReich; they are dismantling everything that is “off -X/Y chromosome” and “off-white”- and when they dismantle the Dept of Education, they will effectively issue the death penalty for all of us who have special needs- $13 billion if you’re counting. #neurotribes
Just a reminder of one of the best books in terms of “autism history” especially the updated version
By the amazing
@stevesilberman.bsky.social
Who is deeply deeply missed by many including the #AutisticCommunity
#Neurotribes
Uggh. This is just the worst. I’m glad Steve Silberman is not here to witness this. I wish Steve Silberman was here to write about it. #neurotribes
Finally finished #Neurotribes by Steve Silberman and came here to talk about it, realized that he passed away recently. It's strange to feel sad as I didn't know him but the book is such a great compilation of autism history. It's a must-read. Learning through history is my fav way to learn.
I think the best thing I can say about Steve, and I could say many lovely things, is that after he wrote #Neurotribes, he made a concerted effort to highlight the work of #ActuallyAutistic writers. Not just me. But @slooterman.bsky.social and Dara McAnulty and others.
I mean that deeply. #Neurotribes is THE book I gift to teachers on how to understand us #autistics better. @stevesilberman.bsky.social work was that good. What a legacy of allyship I doubt we will see such a commitment to us and excellent journalism again.
Heartbroken hear we have lost @stevesilberman.bsky.social the influence he had on the entire #autistic community with his book Neurotribes can't be understated. Deepest sympathy. What a impact he had on all of us. #Neurotribes gave me the language I needed to understand myself. Deeply missed.
