He nodded as if acknowledging this truth, pulled off the ski mask, and then slightly dragging his left leg, he clumped his way to the long counter behind which Susanna stood, her body suddenly tense, wondering who he was and what he wanted. #douglaslives #postapocalypse #newadults #romance
That winter, Hector and I eagerly anticipated each cold snap, because they were tests of our efforts to keep the Lodge warm. We had finished covering the exterior walls with wheat straw and clay insulation, so we were hoping for a hard cold spell. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults
During Meeting he made a little speech.
“Look, you guys. Some of you have been sneaking over to the girls' walkway. You know that’s off limits. And stop pretending to need to use the staircase, because you’ve hurt your leg. You know the rules. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults #village
“I think she was in a bad mood one day, because some of the kids were complaining about how she cut their hair. She insisted that I should come to the classes she was teaching. I complained, but actually, I enjoyed her classes. I always liked school.” #survivingthefog #postapocalypse #newadults
"I'm a zombie. A zombie from the Fog."
I was relieved he was okay, but kind of pissed that he had scared me.
"There are no zombies in the Fog," I said pompously.
"How do you know?"
Good question. I didn't know. Maybe there were zombies in the Fog. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults
We couldn’t have survived otherwise. Eagle’s Retreat was a grim example of what happens to dictators and to the people near them. Sooner or later, they are destroyed.
Having seven kids in our Lodge changed our community in subtle ways we didn’t realize at the time. #kathysrecollections #newadults
Dear Mr. Mayor,
I send you my greetings from your troops at East Post and from myself. I’ve sent my report concerning the conditions at East Post in a separate letter. This letter is regarding the four young children who I send with Ahmad to you. #howardthered #postapocalypse #newadults #village
The four trudged up Logging Camp Road, until they came to the junction of Davis Brown Farm Road where they turned in the direction of the farm. They ate their supper around Mary’s table. The next morning, John informed Mike that they would ride the bikes when they left. #survivingthefog #newadults
We hiked at an easy pace down the road, until we came to the Hanging Tree, and there I stopped, and so did the others. It was the last time the original Spears stood together. I took a good look at each one. We were Californians and had grown up with California attitudes. #howardthered #newadults
He spoke to Kathy, before continuing up the slope. Jacob met him, handed over the spear, and then the rest of us strolled down to them.
“You don’t want to wait for the motorcycle?” Mike asked Ahmad and Rasul when he heard they were taking RV guard duty. #howardthered #postapocalypse #newadults
The sky was clear that night, and the Milky Way stretched from one end to the other. Orion rose about one-thirty. Over her faint objections, Hector and I had placed Oksana between us, and the three of us talked quietly and watched the stars. Occasionally a meteorite shot across the sky. #newadults
The Spears returned to Petersburg three days later. They didn’t say much about what had happened during the time they were away from the village, but one night Eric talked about a conversation that had taken place between the prisoner and him. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults #village
They disappeared over the rise. It was too late to go back to bed. We had chores to do, so we went about our business. The Spears returned to Petersburg three days later. They didn’t say much about what had happened during the time they were away from the village. #kathysrecollections #newadults
He looked directly at the Chief. The Chief and the rest of us bobbed our heads or said words of agreement. For an hour we debated the options and advised Howard on various points, and at the end of the hour those of us on Council gathered with the rest of the villagers in the mess hall. #newadults
They pointed out that no one could see the top of the bus, so it did not matter if the top was unsightly. They did not realize that debris had accumulated, threatening to rust the metal roof. We were still using the bus, and we could not undo the damage rust might cause. #howardthered #newadults
Winter was approaching. It was time to focus on preparations. Work that had been neglected or overlooked was completed.
Some villagers did not understand the ‘why’ of my orders. For example, I ordered some guys to climb on top of the bus and clean the roof. #howardthered #postapocalypse #newadults
Tuesday morning, I announced that we would start a general cleanup of Petersburg, until I was satisfied that everything was shipshape. There were groans of dismay, but not a whole lot of grumbling, since most had thoroughly enjoyed the four-day fair. #howardthered #postapocalypse #newadults #village
“The Chief is with them.”
Oksana understood what I was saying. Howard had been elected Mayor of Petersburg, but the Chief was still the Chief. He had our trust, our respect, and our loyalty.
“Let’s go back to bed,” she said, so that’s what we did. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults
Another chill spread through me. There was only one punishment that was severe enough to keep Kennedy from participating, and that was death. Either someone had been killed, which did not seem likely, given that there was no uproar in the camp, or else someone had been accused of rape. #newadults
Whatever they were doing, they did not want Kennedy to know about it.
“Someone’s in trouble,” Oksana whispered.
I could think of only one reason to keep Kennedy out of the loop. The Spears were debating whether or not to severely punish someone. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults
I followed her out of our room, leaned over the railing, and saw Rasul, Eric, and Ahmad speaking in low tones by the door of the Lodge. Tyler was with them. After a minute, the Spears exited the Lodge, and Tyler entered the Dog Pound. I wondered what was happening. #kathysrecollections #newadults
The best clay soil came from the stream bed, which was running slower by that time of the year. We used cans to scoop up the mixture, and then we dumped it in a five-gallon bucket that had a small hole on the bottom, so the excess water could drain. #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults
“Hector says you might leave Petersburg.”
The Chief paused for one moment and then resumed mopping before he answered. “Hector’s smart.”
“Does that mean you’re leaving?”
“I'm thinking about it. I’d kind of like to see Erin again. I’d like to see the Army’s fort.” #kathysrecollections #newadults
I grinned and sung, “Tote that barge, lift that bale.”
He gave me an annoyed stare. “What are you talking about?”
“Old Man River. My dad used to sing that song whenever I whined about helping my mom. You missed a spot.”
The Chief growled at me, but I just laughed. #kathysrecollections #newadults
“In the time before our world was destroyed, I knew an older minister. He gave me some advice, which I thought at the time was wise, but which I have neglected to remember. The advice was ‘don’t let your message get lost in the messenger.’" #kathysrecollections #postapocalypse #newadults #village
That night we gathered by the fireplace. To catch exploding embers, Hector had made a grill for the fireplace by using a piece of grid wire. Using the grill allowed us to lay closer. Gabby, Paige, Kylie, Star, Makayla, Sasha, and I had a great time lying around and discussing the fair. #newadults
I went behind the mess hall and into the open sky shower, cracked one of the remaining faucets, let cold water dribble into my cupped hands, and wiped my face again and again. Gradually the grief subsided. I turned off the faucet, went out, and looked around. The sun was still shining. #newadults
"The man turned the bike to the left, and we went up a dirt road, but only for a little way, and then he turned to the right, and we bounced along a rough path until we came to a stop next to a recreational vehicle. The other man had arrived ahead of us. I was even more afraid then." #newadults
