5 things to consider before running for office
Identify the issues that you’d like to tackle in your community. By starting small and local, you can map out the change you’d like to enact and determine which office would be most suited to your goals and expertise. Research the office you’d like to run for. What year are you running in? Is the seat you’re running for a vacant one, or does a tried and true incumbent hold it? These are just some questions to ask yourself as you plan your next steps. Plan your finances! Fundraising will be critical when it comes to running an effective and successful campaign. Research campaign finance laws in your state and determine how you’ll raise money to hit your target goal. Assemble your team. It takes a community to build a people-powered movement, so who can you rely on to help you get out the word (and vote!) about your campaign? Celebrating LGBTQ+ New American Pride
Did you know? In 2024, 21 New American representatives openly identify as LGBTQ+ bringing vital visibility to the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, especially those within immigrant communities who often contend with multiple layers of marginalization.
Pride in our community Out of the 203 New Americans we trained last year, 25% are part of the LGBTQ+ community. 16% of our total alumni network ARE LGBTQ+ We know that Pride is both a celebration and a protest. We thank our LGBTQ+ alumni network for showing up as who they are, and fighting to ensure our New American and LGBTQ+ communities are seen and cared for.
