5 starts book review in goodreads saying: "The book by Martin A. Nuñez “A Pocket Guide to Scientific Writing and Publishing,” is a lighthearted introduction to scientific writing. While particularly valuable for early-career scientists, i.e., graduate students, any reader can enjoy the clear, concise, straight-to-the-point writing style and humorous illustrations. Surprisingly, despite the multiple required graduate courses, scientific writing skills are rarely taught formally; it seems professors assume young people get them spontaneously. Yet, even native English speakers trained in US educational institutions frequently struggle to present their thoughts in a clear, cohesive way required in academia.
In his book, Dr. Nuñez takes the reader through the stages of preparing the scientific manuscript, breaking the journey into short, easy-to-grasp steps, concentrating on clarity and precision. He explains challenges awaiting a scientist at different stages of publishing their research, but also reassures the reader that these obstacles can be overcome by a normal human being, and gives suggestions on how to approach “the beast.”
The final section of the book features the collective voice of the author’s colleagues and friends, who offer practical advice on writing techniques and journal selection.
The author’s warm, friendly tone and positivity throughout the book are especially appealing. It feels as though a supportive mentor guides you through the convoluted process of scientific publishing."
