**Today marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina.**

On August 29, 2005, the levees failed, and New Orleans suffered one of the deadliest and most destructive disasters in U.S. history. More than 1,300 lives were lost, entire neighborhoods were destroyed, and hundreds of thousands were displaced. For many, the scars - physical and emotional - still remain.

For my own family, we were fortunate. Everyone survived, though one of us lost their home. Compared to so many who lost everything, that feels small. And yet, every loss, whether a home or a life, was part of a collective grief that reshaped our city and our people forever.

Katrina is not just a tragedy to remember, it’s also a testament to resilience. Against *unimaginable* devastation, New Orleanians rebuilt, mourned together, and kept alive the music, food, traditions, and spirit that make this place unlike anywhere else.

Today, we honor those we lost, those who endured, and the resilience of a city that continues to rise, no matter how many times the waters come.
