I adore Nnedi Okorafor, and it was hard to choose a particular favorite.

Ultimately, I went with BINTI because the MC's journey is so gut-wrenching and beautiful. She is real in a way so few characters ever achieve.

First, I had something else that I needed to finish, then I dragged my way through the first couple of chapters. The book was already due back to the library when it finally grabbed me and then I was a goner. I don’t know what to say about this. A book within a book, yes; parallel stories that alternate between Zelu’s POV and interviews that happen in the future and yet another future (another world?). Honestly, I’m not sure how this would work as an audiobook… To be fair, I didn’t like Zelu’s family. They meant well and clearly they lo...

Binti - The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor, 4 out of 5 Stars - 2025: Book #33, Paperback - 149 pgs, 11 days to complete

Took a while to get the omnibus so that we could read the 3rd book and the short story, but my wife and I both liked this a lot. Lots of cool ideas and unexpected twists. I do wish that so many things in the books didn't start with the letter "O", it got a little confusing. Also, the references to these things got quite repetitive along with treeing, but those things are also what made the book stick out so I was kind of torn. I loved the alien cultures. Unlike some sci-fi, the story really did seem to be about the characters rather than the ideas more like space opera, but it felt different than other space opera I've read. Okorafor has found/created some cool crossover that really works.
