This book sits on my shelf between thrillers and history because it's both. The Eichmann operation changed international law and showed that justice can cross borders.

📆 Preparing my April TBR and I still cannot decide which direction to go with respect to my non-fiction pick of the month (I want to read more so I’ve challenged myself to at least one/month).
Tech history has been a delight, but maybe political stuff 🤔

🏁 …At times Sinclair gets a bit of a kicking, then somebody else will drop Acorn in it for all their own failures too.
Really exciting stuff. I just wish I’d been able to join in more at the time!
🫵🤓👍 Many thanks to @kevedwardsretro.bsky.social for bringing it up

A paperback edition of Robert Napier’s “Voices from a Future Passed” sat on a table with a yellow bookmark sat off to the side to indicate completion.
🏁 Just finished reading Robert Napier’s “Voices from a Future Passed”.
This ‘oral history’ is absolutely splendid. You get to see behind the scenes from those involved, hearing a story told from multiple perspectives, overlapping and expanding on what went before.

📖 Mostly though I am being filled with a huge amount of regret at missing out on so much of the Acorn stuff I‘m now learning that I had no idea about 😐
Too young, unavailable to me, an awful lot passed me by that now, in hindsight, I would have loved to play with.

"Acornsoft was incorporated to develop software for the Acorn Atom, soon after the first machine was shipped in 1980, with David Johnson-Davies as Managing Director. Its focus was on games software but it also developed programming languages and some business applications. "On my first day at Market Hill, Acornsoft had six employees: David his secretary Nikki, Phillipa in charge of product distribution, Chris Jordan as publications editor, with Tim Dobson and Jonathon Griffiths writing games. The rest of us were independent contractors. We were paid royalties or outright for the software we delivered. I wrote a few educational programs; the first was for chemistry. I also wrote a game called Sohinx Adventure and then wrote Database.
"The mainframe computer system at the University of Cambridge was fertile ground for finding software developers. Mathematicians Jonathan Mestel and Peter Killworth wrote groundbreaking text adventure games which Acornsoft released. To this day, interactive fiction enthusiasts believe Philosopher's Quest and Countdown to Doom are among the best text adventure games ever produced.“
📖 Earlier I read a fabulous chapter in “Voices from a Future Passed” focused on Acornsoft. The chap mentions ”Sphinx Adventure” which I remember has not been highly regarded recently by some on @thisweekinretro.bsky.social 😆

📖 Reading “Voices from a Future Passed” I realised that I recognised one of the names mentioned in an early chapter.

Seems I found a book that fit ☺️

Acorn had subcontracted distribution to BL Marketing a subsidiary of breakfast food giant, Weetabix), but erratic deliveries from ICL and Cleartone, and weaknesses in BL's record system had been a formula for failure. As a result, the Weetabix Group decided to shut down BL Marketing. The BBC supported Acorn's decision to set up a distribution arm, and to recruit BL's former staff, to run the operation under Acorn's direct control, while bringing distribution and information services under Acorn's customer relations and marketing management.
As for its suitability for the classroom: Students were known to crash-test BBC Micros by standing on them, and their keyboards were tested well beyond the limits of what a Sinclair QL could withstand.
📖 Blimey, some right nuggets of gold found within “Voices from a Future Passed”.
I had no idea about Weetabix impacting Acorn’s distribution of the #BBCMicro, or that “Students were known to crash-test BBC Micros by standing on them” 😳

The book cover for The Immortalists: The Death of Death and the Race for Eternal Life by Aleks Krotoski is plain orange with a quote at the top in white text ‘A fascinating, deeply reported adventure’ from Oliver Burkeman whose name is below the quote in black text. The main title is in black text left aligned below the quote. The author’s name is below the title left aligned in white text and the subtitle is below that in black text. At the bottom of the cover is a black infinity symbol with the gaps in the middle shaded white with dots to make them look like eyes staring down and to the left.
THE IMMORTALISTS: THE DEATH OF DEATH AND THE RACE FOR ETERNAL LIFE by Aleks Krotoski is a really interesting overview of the tech bros’ foray into extending the human lifespan, that encompasses libertarianism, effective altruism and profit - bit.ly/4siY7zt #bookreview #nonfictionbooks #immortality
