My gear having a breather at the #NormanCross #Napoleonic PoW camp memorial hard by the A1(M) / #ErmineStreet south of #Peterborough, nine years ago today. At that point I was approaching 150 miles in five days.

It’s a big day for the Norman Cross site today. I’ll be there later to meet gathered dignitaries and interested parties and hopefully get a few pictures #NormanCross

For context, this is over 200 years old and was made by prisoners of war with scraps from their meals (and a bit of material). It’s incredible that it’s been made and even more incredible that it still exists #NormanCross

Little did I expect that I would have to polish off my Russian when I started my PhD, yet here I am. Six months in and it’s still surprising me! Who would have thought a collection of bone, wood and straw would be so exciting?! #NormanCross

Ooh! This is a FASCINATING #OTD for my #NormanCross research. This is nearly 20 years before NC was built and I will have to investigate this. (The market image is often used in association with NC but shows Portchester Castle which had a similar market). Another one to add to my research!

Hello to my new followers! I’ve just started a PhD at ARU looking at the #NormanCross collection at Peterborough Museum. The collection contains over 800 objects made by (or relating to) #Napoleonic PoWs and made from bone, straw, wood etc. There are guillotines, ships, dominoes, boxes & much more!

I am very slowly making a list of all of the #NormanCross items to help me understand them better. Every object brings me closer to the man who made it and raises lots of questions. Like which classical figure was depicted holding a lion? There’s one in the collection

It’s a material envelope, open at the top with a spiral bound notepad and biro spilling out. The material is a busy floral pattern in dark blue, mustard yellow and teal on a white background

Made myself a book sleeve to protect my books and notepads when I’m on the move. The yellow lining is a nod to the outfits worn by some of the prisoners at #NormanCross when they had damaged/sold their uniforms #Napoleonic

Spent this afternoon learning to identify the differences between bone and ivory objects. This will be useful! #NormanCross

I haven’t been on here much recently but I’m in search of a little more peace. One thing I therefore haven’t mentioned is that I will be starting a PhD in October with ARU investigating the amazing #NormanCross objects made by POWs during the Napoleonic Wars. It’s going to be interesting!
