#ErmineStreet, looking south just after the point it crossed the River Nene, at Water Newton (Durobrivae). The A1 swings in from the west to join the alignment. Pic from 1976. #Peterborough's suburbs & services have since encroached mightily from the left. #RomanRoadsFriday #RomanBritain

A man looking tired but in good spirits, dressed in an outdoor coat and shorts, standing in front of a Volvo with its hatchback open. A red and white umbrella leans on the car, and two 'Saxon' shields lean against its bumper.

At Reed village (just south of #Royston), by the A10 / #ErmineStreet, nine years ago this morning. With well over 200 miles walked, I had just bumped into the 'Volvo Support Pony' awaiting a group of reenactors walking a related route. The coffee biscuits were welcome.

A large wooden gibbet next to the entrance to a McDonald's at a road junction in the countryside. A sign read 'No HGVs', with a McDonald's advert in the background and another sign that reads 'Caxton Gibbet Park'. The gibbet has been rebuilt several times. The gibbet of #CaxtonGibbet, by #ErmineStreet / A1198 in #Cambridgeshire. Caxton itself is a village just over a mile to the south, but they sensibly put the gibbet next to the McDonalds, a mile and half away to help cater for the crowds. Taken nine years ago today, whilst hoofing it to Hastings.

A roadside memorial in the form of a classical column with a French Imperial Eagle on the top. A rucksack and umbrella are resting on the base. There is an interpretation panel nearby.

My gear having a breather at the #NormanCross #Napoleonic PoW camp memorial hard by the A1(M) / #ErmineStreet south of #Peterborough, nine years ago today. At that point I was approaching 150 miles in five days.

Nine years ago today: dodging traffic on #ErmineStreet, south of #Ancaster. Grantham is away to the right. I don't recommend walking that section - unless the verges have had some serious attention. #RomanBritain

Nine years ago this morning: on Roman Road 28a heading east towards the Lincoln Edge and the junction with #ErmineStreet. RAF Scampton is away to the left, and #Lincoln ('Lindum Colonia') itself to the right. #RomanSiteSaturday #RomanBritain #OnThisDay

#ErmineStreet providing yet another landscape history study, near Hibaldstow, #Lincolnshire: 1) poss. pre-Roman field system; 2) the Roman road; 3) enclosures respect line of said road; 4) railway line carves a diagonal across the lot; road flown over it on an embankment. #RomanRoadsFriday

RAF Barkston Heath, #Lincolnshire, snug alongside #ErmineStreet & partly straddling it. Historic #Ancaster is just beyond the crossroads to the right. As usual, not how enclosure boundaries respect the road, whereas the railway cuts some of them. Pic from 1944. #RomanRoadsFriday

A flat, arable landscape viewed from directly above. The scene is dominated by a large, modern runway cutting across the fields. More subtly, another line cuts across that, and disappears off the top and bottom of the image. Image via Ordnance Survey, 2023.

The southern end of the runway at RAF #Waddington. Note the straight feature angling across it from top left to bottom right: #ErmineStreet, plain as day. #RomanRoadsFriday #Lincolnshire

The Red Arrrows flying over RAF Scampton...and #ErmineStreet. Note the line running top left to middle bottom, severed by the runway (when it was expanded so that Avro Vulcans could use it) #RomanRoadsFriday #Lincolnshire

Across six lanes of a major road - empty of cars - a car sales lot and modern style warehouse retail buildings. The sky is blue, some small clouds. Three blue flags blow in the breeze.

It's often hard to be inspired by the Great Cambridge Road A10, but I do like this photo.

This section (nr Lincoln road, Enfield) is - I think - on the route of Roman Ermine Street (linking Bulls Cross and Tottenham High Rd).
