I decided to pull a few items out of the hat so to speak today, here in the last 6 hours of Stunday. I miss the "Mediterranean light" of the Four Corners region, especially Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Here you are standing beside an ancient pueblo outside of Jemez Springs. The walls build by hand, atop a hill above the modern town, which I loved. It was just 17 miles from my home. The green foliage of the trees seem alight from the setting Sun's low-flying rays, the blue sky bisected by an airliner's con trail high above this land. The walls are the red and orange earth tones of the land. Sometimes we plan. Sometimes we follow our nose. This village snuck up on me one day in 2014 on leaving a grocer's in Los Alamos and wondering, "What happens if I go through that gated border-crossing looking thing?" Once I made it through the gates, the road kept getting more and more interesting, so I kept adding "just a few miles more." Before long, maybe 30 minutes or so, a place out of time, both the modern village, and the ancient adobe, appeared. Just on the other side of the largest caldera I have ever seen. In the mountains, no less. Yes, there are such events. Yes, there are such micro road trips. I'm thinking, maybe two weeks in the winter should be spent up there, writing something.
