3rd, the Clause 50 "modular" approach is good. Nature isn't included wholesale but schemes are developed one-by-one. For example we support a #NutrientNeutrality module, but species need much more care. Legal tests should ensure sound science before a new feature is added. 🧵9/12
Today, the Supreme Court hears CG Fry v SoS & Somerset Council.
@estelledehon.bsky.social, Nina Pindham & Hannah Taylor represent LINK, intervening to ensure #NutrientNeutrality rules protect sites like the Somerset Levels & Moors.

Nutrient neutrality rules were put in place to prevent more neutrient pollution being added to the water catchment area. It is disappointing that @lukecharters.bsky.social does not value this. @greenparty.org.uk @teamlabouruk.bsky.social @naturalengland.bsky.social #nutrientneutrality

The gist was that #nutrientneutrality rules shouldn't apply to developments which already had planning permission. The case went to the High Court who rejected the argument but gave leave for the case to "leapfrog" over the Appeal Court & be heard by the Supreme Court. 2/8
The “polluter pays” principle may have been (reluctantly) ported over from EU law into the Environmental principles policy statement. But in practice it’s the polluter who gets paid. This cannot be the right approach to achieving #nutrientneutrality.
Another #nutrientneutrality story. "Torquay developer frustrated by anti-pollution rules". The Cavanna development's in Dorset. Why should Dorset residents pay to clean up sewage discharges from new housing developments? Ironic they're happy to pay for a SANG but not NN www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-engl...

Highly misleading portrayal of nutrient neutrality story @BBCDorset. Even the @Dorsetecho managed to explain the reason for the delay is the Govt has yet to complete the passage of the LURB & assent it. The #NutrientNeutrality rules aren't the problem....
Maybe a few months ago we might've said "Yeah Sunak can't be as bad as Truss" But what with ever more Sewage in the Rivers, the attack on NE over Dartmoor grazing; plans to abandon #nutrientneutrality; & now the Net Zero debacle.. it feels like the #AttackOnNature is back on 2/5
Just a thought: Is Sunak taking the axe to climate targets as revenge for his failed attempts to ditch the #nutrientneutrality environmental protections?
Could he be that petty and vindictive?
for @politicshome to run a story on #nutrientneutrality without mentioning nature or wildlife.
Hello @uklabour perhaps the OEP's finding that the Govt "may have" (ie definitely did) broken the law over sewage releases will help you find a spine and vote against the LURB amendments on #nutrientneutrality tomorrow. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-66778409

30th June 2023 High Court concludes that nutrient neutrality rules apply to development where outline Planning Permission has already been given. ...
After the reverse ferret by the RSPB over their response to the Government's slashing of the #nutrientneutrality rules, there's a view that it's unacceptable to accuse individual ministers of lying, presumably because these decisions are collegiate. What's been going on? 1/8
