Tucked away among the trees are several koalas sleeping peacefully with very little disturbing them. There's one curled up into a ball as it holds onto a thin branch, displaying remarkable strength as the branch bounces in the breeze. Another has a sturdier support, nestled in the curve of a tree and resting its arms and head on an extending branch. It Over towards the right, there's a koala that appears to be awake. Alma and Louis notice it first, and they scurry over to see it climbing up a blackwood tree that overlooks some wetlands in the distance. The koala pauses and digs its claws into the tree, lifting its head towards the sky and basking in the sunlight that flashes through the dangling eucalyptus leaves around it. Alma and Louis watch on for a bit, waiting to see if the koala does anything more. As the koala keeps enjoying sitting up in the leaves and the showering warmth, they soon grow bored, or at least, Louis does, for he bolts to the other side of the platform with Alma hurrying after him. After they're gone, Ed takes a step closer towards the hanging koala, resting both his hands on the railing and lifting his head towards it. The koala suddenly turns its head as if it had heard him, and Ed's breath goes still. He stares into the koala's dark eyes, and the koala slowly blinks at him, holding his gaze before eventually looking back up at the sky.

My last #WIPWednesday before my #OFMDBB25 is posted on the 24th. This fic is an homage to a place that is very special to me. With that in mind, please enjoy some koalas. 🐨❤️

Everything’s great! Except Ed has been pining for his best friend for years, and is sick to death of getting hit on by passengers. After a particularly trying day, he brings it up to Stede, and they hatch a brilliant (incredibly stupid) plot: they’ll pretend they’re dating, so everyone will think they’re off limits. It’ll be great! Things do not go as planned. Tropes: fake dating, fluff, smut, idiots in love

He raises his eyebrows at Stede, a silent okay? Stede blinks a few times, gives Ed a minute nod. Still slowly, ever so slowly, he leans his head against Stede's knee, face still turned up toward Stede. Stede's tongue darts out to wet his lips and Ed's eyes snag on it, hang there on his lips even as he turns — still so slowly, languidly — until his cheek is pressed to the outside of Stede's thigh. Above the line of his beard, he can feel the curls of Stede's leg hair against his skin, and he rubs his face in a tiny circle, just for the sheer joy of its roughness against him. Stede's still staring, doesn't seem to be able to stop staring, lips parted, and he hopes helplessly that Stede's enjoying the roughness of his beard in return. The eye contact is more intense than anything he's experienced in his life, he feels pierced by it, an insect on a board, splayed open for any observer, and he wants that, god, he wants Stede to fucking see him, to finally fucking understand, but more than that, to accept, to change his mind, to want in return. It's all a performance, he knows it's all a performance, but god, he fucking wishes, he fucking aches for that look on Stede's face to be real.

He turns even further, until his nose is brushing against Stede's thigh instead, his lips, and it's work to keep looking at Stede out of the corners of his eyes but it's worth it, so fucking worth it when Stede bites at his bottom lip, a ripe-raspberry flush spreading up his face and down his chest, and it doesn't matter that it's only a physiological response or whatever, it's the most gorgeous thing he's ever seen and Ed can't help it. He turns his face fully into Stede's leg, mouthing at the skin, trailing kisses upward, tiny little things, more whispers than kisses really. The hair against his lips is everything he's ever wanted in the world. He wants to breathe it in, fill his lungs with the sensation, fucking choke on it. He noses under the cold wet hem of Stede's swim trunks and is rewarded with the sound of Stede's harsh breathing laid over the lapping of the water and the buzzing of the insects. And then — and then — Stede's hand settles on the back of his head, gentle and undemanding but there, and when that happens the only sound he can hear anymore is his own breathy little moan, and his eyes have fluttered shut, when did that happen —
