I promise there is a happy ending though 💖

After a while, with the throbbing in his knee virtually gone, he began to get drowsy. By then he had a folder of the best photos, all labelled and ready to be printed, so he leaned his head back on the cushion and let his mind drift. The ring on his finger sparkled in the afternoon sunlight slanting in through the windows. They’d slipped these rings on each other’s fingers at the shop, decided they were it—and just never taken them off. Kinda like the way they’d been with each other since the day they’d met, taking each other in, body and soul, and never taking— “Off!” Stede cried from down the hall. “Come on, get off. Fuck!” “Babe?” He remembered to stand up slowly, but the second he clocked that his knee was fine, he legged it down the corridor. “What’s up?” Stede was in the bathroom, furiously swirling liquid soap into a stopped up sink. “I can’t get my ring off.” “Oh.” All his half-dream thoughts rushed over him. He was all in. But maybe Stede... “You want to take your ring off?”

Ed is drowning. It's fine. He already made his peace with the fact that he’s gonna die, or he’s already dead, or something between those two. He doesn’t know any more, doesn’t care. The important thing is that there’s nothing for him out there. There’s no one for him. He thought there was. He was wrong. He can’t feel the cold of the water or the burning in his lungs. All he can feel is the tiredness, carved deep, engraved in his very bones. And he can still feel a stinging pain, thin, sharp, deep and all consuming, purple and orange like a sunrise on a lonely dock. Yes, that’s why this decision was easy, comforting even.
