Progress at December 2024 • In August 2024 the Minister took forward decisions to introduce a unique identifier but not a beneficial ownership register. While modernising the legislation, the reforms do not involve making beneficial owners’ identifying information available on a public register. Judith Collins made Minister for Public Service, meaning that after 11.5 years she has regained responsibility for NZ’s membership of the Open Government Partnership.

So, as feared, the Public Service Commission has recommended to Ministers that New Zealand withdraw from the Open Government Partnership. It seems Cabinet will agree, breaching National, ACT & NZ First’s pre-election pledges to remain a member.

They clearly don’t live up to the Algorithm Charter, there’s no enforcement, and Stats NZ has said the cuts to its budget means it can’t implement the recommendations from the review of the Charter. See update on #OGPNZ commitment 8 from last month.

Email from the Minister of Justice's private secretary telling officials what Ministers wanted in the scope of commitment 7 - ie. to review existing secrecy clauses as civil society had wanted - and that the Minister has said they "can't afford to put anything on our work programme"
Here's the screenshot of that. "We can't afford to put anything on our work programme and that the team responsible has a number of high priority, time sensitive projects on the go at the moment." AKA work on Open Government Partnership commitments congenitally underfunded. #OGP #OGPNZ
