I enjoyed the final paper of the weekend, Jane Beal’s “The Influence of the Pearl-Maiden on the Imagination of J.R.R. Tolkien”, exploring three strong characters in Tolkien’s legendarium inspired by the Pearl Maiden and her strength: Lúthien, Elwing the White, and Galadriel. Thank you, Jane!

Chris left us with this: While Tolkien didn’t give Helm’s daughter a name, his omission allows others to subcreate and revise the story. This is so important to us on @athraplay.athrabeth.com and out storytelling.
Thanks so much for your presentation, Chris!

Fantastic roundtable with Janet Brennan Croft, Leslie Donovan, Cami Agan, Kristine Larsen, Melanie Rawls, Robin Reid, and Una McCormack: “Women and Gender in Mythopoeic Fantasy: What Lies Ahead?”
Fascinating insights on the fear that stems from critical examination of beloved works.

Great presentation from Lelie Brémont, “The Lay(er)s of the Corrigan”, examining the importance of the Corrigan in Tolkien’s work through the lens of The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun, arguing that Tolkien’s portrayal of the Corrigan is unfair.

I enjoyed Alexandra Filonenko’s presentation, “Mysterium Tremendum et Fascinans”: Melian’s and Lúthien’s Numinosity”. A fascinating exploration of Melian and Lúthien and their roles in Middle-earth through the lens of the Numinous, the Great Mother Archetype, and the Two Goddess Complex.

A fascinating presentation by Kris Larsen @jrrtastrochick.bsky.social: ““The gift which was withheld I take”: The Rape of the Sun Maiden in Tolkien’s Legendarium”. A hugely important look at Tolkien’s use of sexual assault in his legendarium throughout the decades of his writing. Thanks, Kris.
