April 2021. #Orkney vole living in House 7 at #SkaraBrae. There were loads in the village at the start of the spring that year following #Covid by August they were all gone due to the stoats 😭
This is such good news, I have been worried about them! #Orkney voles are unique, arriving on the islands during the #Neolithic they have a lot to tell us about human and species migration

Nope, but I can do a tenuous 4...
1. I used to work and volunteer at #Orkney Museum
2. My son's friend at primary school was Otto Barthurst's son
3. Otto directed Colin Firth in Lockerbie the Search for Truth
4. Colin and Kevin Bacon appeared in the 2005 film Where The Truth Lies

The view out the back of the library. It's very cloudy but very light.
Well this is quite unbelievable.
We started back in early January on a cold, dark night BUT now it's the end of March and it's Monday night and it's 5pm so it's time for EPISODE TWELVE of 'How light is it in #Orkney at 5pm this week?'
OMG
PEOPLE

Bringing some representation for the underappreciated #selkie for this month's #hardcoverchallenge 💪 Love getting to paint some of the UK folklore I grew up reading about.

Orkney / This Life Andrew Greig For Catherine and Jamie It is big sky and its changes, the sea all round and the waters within. It is the way sea and sky work off each other constantly, like people meeting in Alfred Street, each face coming away with a hint of the other’s face pressed in it. It is the way a week-long gale ends and folk emerge to hear a single bird cry way high up. It is the way you lean to me and the way I lean to you, as if we are each other’s prevailing; how we connect along our shores, the way we are tidal islands joined for hours then inaccessible, I’ll go for that, and smile when I pick sand off myself in the shower. The way I am an inland loch to you when a clatter of white whoops and rises . . . It is the way Scotland looks to the South, the way we enter friends’ houses to leave what we came with, or flick the kettle’s switch and wait. This is where I want to live, close to where the heart gives out, ruined, perfected, an empty arch against the sky where birds fly through instead of prayers while in Hoy Sound the ferry’s engines thrum this life this life this life.
It is big sky and its changes,
the sea all round and the waters within.
It is the way sea and sky
work off each other constantly…

#StandingStoneSunday
The Stones of Stenness #Orkney taken in 2022 on a stormy winter's day.
Originally 12 stones stood here but only 4 remain. The circle is located on the edge of the isthmus between Harray and Stenness lochs by the #Neolithic village of Barnhouse.

I've just seen it's #StandingStoneSunday and I'm a bit rubbish at this as I didn't take a photo, but yesterday I drove along the road that runs between the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar and they looked majestic as always in the dark grey rain-laden sky. #Orkney
🇬🇧 Three millennia-old standing stones of the Stenness circle in Orkney rise defiantly against a dramatically clouded sky, with a calm loch mirroring the soft evening light behind them. The tiny human figures at their base remind us that these monumental „tools" of our ancestors have yet to come with an instruction manual.

Fascinating research into the mapping of the North of #Scotland in particular #Orkney and it's significance in #Medieval Europe.
What a moving story. That poor girl. So many of society rules evolve & change with the times. There was no need for this or so many other prejudices that have & continue to occur throughout the generations. It makes you really think about what’s important.

Midhowe chambered Cairn, Rousay. The largest tomb in #Orkney. 32.5m long, 23m wide, it has 12 chambers, 8 of which held the remains of 25 people, many had been placed on benches, 9 in a crouched position.

The DVD cover for the first series of the BBC series, Luther, depicting Idris Elba as the title character.
So, onto Luther! An instant antidote to The Killing. We’d forgotten how fast-paced and thrilling the first series was. Just brilliant. Idris Elba’s performance overshadowed only by Ruth Wilson. Her best role? Sadly we’ll rip thru them in next to no time!
